This forum and Realistically treating Clem like a living person-Innocence VS Humanity and sanity.

edited March 2014 in The Walking Dead

People keep saying they don't want Clem to lose her innocence.

Well you may want to have a look around, because she lost that shit when Omid died if she didn't already when she saw Lee and her parents die. Have you seen how she acts? She's mature now, but it doesn't mean she has lost her heart. She still has her humanity, which is a magnitude better than innocence. She fully knows of the evils and consequences of the world, and yet tries to help the good people anyway.

She's not a defenseless child anymore:

But she's still a good person, and she's still alive. And that's what matters most, in the end

What we should be saying is: I don't want Clem to lose her Humanity, or her sanity.

Anyhow, please, discuss.

  • I know love new mature clem just miss little jokes and smiles whole depressive everything awful feel getting me depressed can have moment where clem tells few awful jokes or puns need a little injection of happiness hurts to see her like this

  • This is exactly my position.

  • Well the little jokes made a return in episode 2 (and I think the smiles may have as well also). It's supposed to hurt to see her like this, that's why people get invested :p

This is the walking dead after all!

People keep saying "I miss the old clem" or "I wish clem wasn't so mean" but if she was like she was in S1, she would be DEAD.

And let's hypothetically say she is like S1 clem in S2, there would only be one episode in S2 because she would have most likely died from Winston, in the forest, or the walker fight in the shed. And like OP said, she still has plenty of faith in humanity but after what she saw it would be impossible for her to not lose her innocence.

  • Another thing to keep in mind as well is that Clem may be more mature now but it doesn't mean that she's reached her maximum level of maturity by any stretch of the imagination. Yes, she is very mature for her age, but that age is still 11. Mentally, she's probably around the level of a smart teenager. And the thing about teenagers is that, well, they're dicks. They do and say dumb, impulsive things to try to seem edgy or try to prove themselves to the people around them.

Sometimes, that can lead to someone like Becca who just says whatever makes her sound the most cold-hearted and "tough", regardless of how it makes the people around her feel. I don't think that Clem is anywhere close to that (well maybe if you chose all of the scumbag options), but even someone as nice as Clem can get a little bit more of a rebellious teenage streak in them every once in a while.

So, yeah, she is probably going to be snarkier and more pessimistic this time around, but I think that's okay so long as she retains her empathy and capacity to care about others. Clem still has a lot of growing up to do (hopefully...), and I suspect that if she manages to find a stable mentor by the end of all this (pleasebeChristapleasebeChristapleasebeChrista), she'll eventually mellow out a bit more.

  • They also seem to forget that it was possible for Clem to shoot her captor in the head in S1. Nick and the group can plainly see that she is not an innocent little girl, which is why she is treated more like an adult compared to Sarah, who is older yet treated like a child.
