Flaw found in my third play through

In my third time playing season one I realized that if Clementine is 8 years old, then why is she only in grade 1? In season 1 episode 1at Hershel's farm, Clem tells katjaa that she is in grade 1. On the walkie talkie she tells Lee that she is 8 years old. Did Clementine fail a grade or is this an error by Telltale. Kids are generally 6 years old in grade 1, and 8 years old in grade three. Can anyone explain this? Did I miss something?

    Some people start going to school with 7years instead of 6years. She was proabply at the end of her first grade when the apocolypse started.
