In my main play through they're both alive, I'm more bothered about Nick than Alvin to be particularly honest. Though, I'm going to play it several times with different outcomes, so in save two, Alvin will die. Save three, Nick will die and in my fourth save both of them will die just to add some flavour to the game and change conversations.
I have a few playthroughs (thanks to 4 save slots) but I think it's most interesting to save Alvin after you convince Rebecca to give herself up because Carver will specifically remember what Clem did, and in the next episode preview, Kenny will make mention of it, too. It seems Nick was going to get himself killed somehow, anyway, so he's out in half of my saves.
Yeah, same here, it would be a game breaker for me if i think like i know about how this episodic gaming would work. And it was good opportunity to shoot.

Both. I was certain Kenny wouldn't kill Carver, or if he did, something bad would happen to the others. In Nick's case, I did everything I could to convince Walter he was a good guy. It's pretty cool having two determinant characters. Just hope that at least one of them lasts over an episode.

Yeah, I realised that too. Main reason i chose not to
I didn't meta-game so Alvin ended up dead, as I would of told him to shoot in that situation as I wouldn't know the outcome of him not dying.
