I lost years of my life in IE

edited September 2008 in General Chat
People have been telling me to switch over, claiming all my issues would be resolved, promising a more stable and fluid experience, and swearing that if I was to make the change, I'd get an elite deluxe reservation for Heaven in the afterlife. I kept saying "Well, IE does everything I want and it's built-in. Why install some third party app?"

Five words: I WAS SUCH AN IDIOT! I'm ashamed of myself, and don't know where to hide now.

I'm obviously referring here to that sunny morning last week when I finally decided to stop being a stupid dumb cow and proceeded to ditch IE7 in favor of Firefox 3. No collection of words or any poetic prose of any kind could possibly express the revelation I felt. I surrender to you Mozilla, you've win the war. I was your last enemy. But not anymore.

All I can do now to redeem myself is apologize to all Firefox users and start enjoying the Internet like never before. Among you are people who insisted on the "switch", and for that, thank you so much. I mean it!

Rachel,
Firefox User :) :)

    Great, no-one cares.

Sorry for the attitude, but I've had enough of people thinking that one browser is better than another and trying to force everyone to switch to their specific browser (I'm not saying you're doing this). Whatever the user is comfortable with works for me, I'm not going to think someone is an idiot for using one browser over another. If someone changes their opinion on someone when they find out what browser they use, then that person is a jerk.

You don't need to feel "ashamed" for using IE7. Let's take something random: toothpaste. I use Brand A, you use Brand B. It's like me going into your bathroom and calling you an idiot for using Brand B, putting up posters in your house saying "BUY BRAND A". Okay, this is a stupid and exaggerated example, but I have had enough of the company trying to shove their products down my throat, let alone users doing it.

(I'm not sure if this post was deleted, but I got an error when editing it...)

Did you read my post Guybrush? All I'm trying to do is express my love of something I recently discovered. I felt unhappy about a software I was using, so I changed it to something else that I really love. And I'm adding a bit of humor because I enjoy it. Simple as that. You're the one turning this into a pointless debate.

Oh, and thanks a bunch for the attitude. I was really hoping for something like that. Gee...

I apologise, I was the jerk there. I've spent much too long on various forums with countless browser debates that it just sent me round the bend.

It's ok Guybrush. I'm not mad at you or anything. I just... didn't realize this could turn into a debate. I hate those! But watch it with the tone, I'm easily irritated these days. :p

    Apology accepted. :D

^ On the internet, EVERYTHING is grounds for a flame war. :p

But yeah, welcome to the world of Firefox. And wait until you discover the full potential of plug-ins. :D You'll never want to even look at IE again.

I had to use IE earlier, and it was missing all my plugins, like the one that makes the Youtube players not horrible. You don't miss these things til they're gone ):

When I have a choice, I use FF2. I did have FF3 for a while, but there were a few things I couldn't get used to (the Awesome Bar was a pest sometimes, and I don't think I helped by mucking it up in the about:config, and I couldn't get my internet banking working through FF3).

Hey, let's keep it positive, folks.

From the perspective of someone who works in web, Firefox has been a great asset for me. I'm updating a section of the Telltale site right now, and Firefox has been much more cooperative in terms of accepting HTML/CSS code as written, haha.

5 years ago and beyond, trying to make things work in a bunch of different browsers was kind of a nightmare, but I'm fairly certain Firefox has been a force for good in making that relatively easy to do now. I like being able to code something and know that if it works in Firefox, it'll probably work in Safari, Opera, and other browsers that comply with web standards.

That said, I don't think IE7 is a bad browser. It's just late to the web-standards party, and and it showed up a little bit drunk and belligerent, muttering things about the box model under its breath.

Back in early 2004, when TechTV still existed(it was the best channel on television, hands-down), I had the benefits of Firefox as a browser alternative explained to me. I was won over by promises of tabbed browsing and further security, and I quickly found myself very happy with Firefox for a wide variety of reasons, customization and an expandable feature set being a couple of the main reasons.

IE has since improved vastly, and I think we can partially thank Mozilla for that push for certain features. I tend to suggest Firefox to people in the same vein that I suggest any product that has exceptionally high quality. Not because people who don't use alternative browsers are "stupid", but because there are benefits to using Firefox from which a lot of heavy web users can benefit. While the gap between IE and Firefox has definitely become more narrow, I still think the large and strong extension community and wider customization makes Firefox just *that* much better than Internet Explorer for your average internet addict.

Very well put Rather Dashing! ;)

For the record, I don't consider myself stupid or idiotic. I was just being sarcastic in my first post.

Back when Firefox was buggy as hell, I used Avant Browser (which uses IE as a backend) for quite some time as it had features I wanted and liked.

Then one time when upgrading, they lost all my settings, so I switched to Opera which I knew was more standards compliant that any other browser at that time.

Stuck there for several years, but when Gmail/Google Calendar upgraded and added some useful features, Opera would crash on those sites every now and again, which was annoying. Opera 9.5 came along and it once again lost a lot of my settings etc, and didn't solve the Gmail crash issues, but luckily Firefox 3 was not far away.

So now I have Firefox 3 :) And although I had to spend a bit of time (about 2 days) finding all the extensions I needed to make FF3 have the Opera features I wanted and was used to, it is now my preferred browser.... but with extensions to add, it does mean using it on someone else's computer can be a little painful... cos all the tabs are up the top! I want em down the bottom dammit!

So biggest complaint about FF - make it easier to configure! Half the time I need to install some extension or fiddle about in about:config to find a simple option to change the layout or behaviour of /DEFAULT/ things in the browser (not added features). This sort of thing is what Opera got right straight off the bat.

I wish my Internet Explorer would work. It's like really buggy & I need a new upgrade.

Just dont forget to install Noscript and Adblock Plus extensions and youll be quite safe surfing. (just dont allow java on ANY chineese or Japaneese websites AT ALL)

And you might want to check on the extension "save image in folder" if you save images often from the net.

What do you have against Chinese and Japanese sites? I frequent a lot of sites of Japanese origin and never have had anything bad happen.

Also, block Javascript at your own risk. Half the internet relies on it at this point :)
