Job, Career or Career Plan

edited April 2014 in General Chat

Heyah! so uhh what is your job, career or a career plan (if you are still a student) :D?
Do you like your job?
is it tedious?
advices :D?
do you wish that you have learned more in school?

Now now, I do not mean to stalk you. I am just curious and trying to understand. Playing videogames usually seen to be a hobby among youths by societies, even though we ourselves see that the audience is expanding because some adults can’t let go of their kid self. For many "bad" of us I guess who are “addicted” or just can’t time mange, we get stigmatized a bit due to it being conflicted with academics, social life and what not. The Telltale community seems to be consist of both gamers who are ahem not rated m for mature and those who they themselves are raising a family, and I just want to know how is it there on the other side. And some advice…and on top of that having a public discussion rather than personal counselling, getting to know how your lives are, I mean you don’t have to give the whole thing, you don’t have to give anything at all cause it is the internet.
This is my Career plan: no Career plan LOL! (WARNING LONG POST…maybe you should just answer above question, that would make my day too :D).

I have been offered admission to my second choice of university (thank god), but still waiting for my first choice because the 2nd one will require my whole family to move for me(I am the youngest cuddly pie). It was for social science economics, with I am assuming a minor in computer science. For my first (and all) of my uni’s I have applied to economics, social science like anthro, and computer science. Getting into any of the subjects in the first uni would be fine, a job where you can help people would be cool. I have very good marks in comsci and aps but others…ehh..I have bad marks in functions..
I am a bad student, a procrastinator really, bad study skills and uhh do not really have the intelligence to decipher how to get marks the cleverest way(I wonder how did I get those offers). I have been keeping up my mark on my calculus but my English mark is bad, I do not get my English teacher who keeps saying that my essay is a summary. With all this I wonder if I will ever get into my first choice of uni…which I don’t want to go into due to its competitiveness..but would like a job at the end to keep me and other happy :3

But this is not the main point, my main point is if I should just try and go into the video game industry and be a developer or a designer. From my childhood, I played games a lot and later had a sort of a drama to make me stay abstinence from it. Yet again I was never able to let go of it, if I won’t play it then I will just read the damn story online on its wikia. I am engaged in learning how to create them, I keep thinking about it, I sometimes go and draw and design(mostly anime though I did other forms e-e;), I know how flash, 3d modeling, animation, and coding works. But that’s it though, nothing else.

In my life I was able to create 2 short videogames in groups for class project, one with visual basic and another was a guitar hero parody created with unity(though it never deducted points for buttons continuously) My art skills are not of pro and I never took the next art class that taught you how to make portfolio, 3d animation IS where I just flipped the table, 3d modeling I was like nope.
I did apply for video game designing at a uni but I don’t think I will be allowed to go there, which would make sense because there is not just uncertainty with myself, I came to accept (within the drama that occurred) that I am suffering the consequence of not controlling myself or my time or putting more energy for me. I came to understand that the reason I love these games because we want to have the experience of the characters. So should I be living to create more stories? (Potentially having other people live through the same experience as me with being labelled as addicted?) Or should I be living to turn my life into THAT kind of stories? Risking the fact that Ill be heading with the flow where I won’t be enjoying.

Anything related to art and entertainment is a gambling game, I mean look at Vincent van ghough! He got famous after he died! My sister informed me that the video game industry can be very daunting, you get exploited and you won’t be making any decisions. But come on I knew that! The only way you can do that if you go indie or something. Is it really daunting? Remember the game I made with unity is placed as a brutal, brutal memory but I was happy and it was totally worth it. What I experienced maybe just 1% so I want to know, how is it really like in the vg industry? Do you guys like it? Is it worth it?

Well uhh that ends my rant. Hopefully I didn’t give too much info on myself to make myself stalk able.

Sorry if its too TL;DR for you, I just want to know your experiences.
Thanks. Hopefully you won’t be scared by my grammar and long wall of text.

  • ha ha ha...okay.

  • I'm one of the older ones on here, not so old that I don't work anymore, but old enough that I played the LucasArts adventures that Telltale's earlier games were based on when they first came out. That's about as specific as I get about my age. :-)

I'm a professional software developer, but I don't work in game development. I can tell you that across the industry (not necessarily Telltale), game development is one of the most stressful out there. You have to really love what you're doing to survive it, and realize that making games isn't as fun as playing them.

As you're just getting into college (why would any of the rest of your family have to move no matter where you go? Leave them behind!), it's OK to have some general ideas of what you're interested in but not sure exactly where you're going. Part of college is realizing that some things aren't as appealing as you thought they were, and some areas you thought were boring in high school actually turn out to be more interesting.

The advice I can give you is to study at least a few things that apply to more than one field. While I've always been interested in computers (at least after PCs were invented - yes, I'm old enough to remember that, too), I also focused on math, believing that would get me places even if all the computer jobs went bust. I also have a minor in psychology. Try to pick some things that will allow you to switch careers if you get into the game development world, only to realize it isn't for you after all.

English is actually pretty important, at least in terms of grammar and getting your point across. You will need that in any field. When your English teacher is complaining that your essay is a summary, what he/she means is that you basically wrote down what happened in the book or from the lectures, but you're not providing any of your own insight. Why do you think the book's characters behaved in the way they did? Could they have behaved differently? Does the story have some deeper meaning behind the words? Analyze it.

  • Worked to become a cop right out of school, did all the courses recommended for it...then discovered it wasn't for me. Kind of blew, but it was an experience all the same.

I'm now an automotive engineer, which was what had truly interested me my whole life.

  • Holy crap i just got crushed by a wall of text....... i have a really crappy attention span so im afraid i didn't (couldn't) read......but..............

Im hoping to get into college this year on a horticulture course. Taking my highers (im scottish so my qualifications are - highers etc) this year in English, Faith and Philosophical studies and Biology (among others, but those are my main).

Agree'd with warpseed english is more important than you might think and can actually be quite fun once you get into it.

If im not successful with the horticulture field....well im really not sure what i'll do.....dead end job in a supermarket maybe?? Hopefully it will enjoy it though, and besides there are many different fields within horticulture, farming runs in the family but it's never really been my thing, if i don't enjoy the more "ornamental" side of horticulture (landscape gardening etc) i reckon i'll go down the conservation movement route i know a few local woodland conservations.

Fuuu...I have trouble with this question! My major in college is International Politics. (Global Security track), but I'm also trying to obtain Security/risk Management certification and learn Arabic as well.

I'm not completely sure what I want to do when I get out. Hopefully, I'll get into the US Foreign Service, but if I don't, I might work at n NGO or PMC as a security consultant/analyst. If all that falls through, I have a good background in professional writing, so I could probably do okay as an editor or journalist.

Also in reply to OP: It sounds like you're more interested in writing the games than animating them. I would kill to do video game writing, but it's a difficult field to break into.

  • Yeah...me too ;_; I am lucky to have few friends to have conversation about it but we all have different taste.

  • That must have sucked at first, but i am glad that you are in something that is interesting to you. I know one of my relative was a brilliant student, they got into this special program then but god knows what happend they suddenly fell down almost about to fail. They changed their special program to a normal program. That person has a pretty good job now and works at a very good company, but i can tell that person is not fully happy because on top of something that is not their interest that person also worries about keeping the job and having a upright image infront of their superior.

Thanks for the advice, I guess I shouldnt worry about not having a solid plan. Maybe I should take other courses in the summer just for backup, or find a class about animation just for fun.

As of right now though, I have no clue what the heck my english teacher wants...I think I'll have to get extra help.

  • Sorry :D
I only meant to ask and learn while sneakily getting advices but then it turned into an emotional ball of life story...
I dont know why but I always imagined farming just passed family to family, something only by intuition, spiritual and one with nature. I never imagined the subject being approached in an academic perspective XD.

    In a joking way :
Good for you in a zombie apocalpse situation, hopefully you will apply your knowledge effectively then and no one will have to turn to canabalism...

  • That sounds really exciting and so cool! language is an important asset, I sucked at learning french but I hope one day I will resume it again because where I live having both english and french is good for jobs.

When I imagine about creation of videogames I imagine making it alive in my own detail, something that is impossible in the industry because developing games is a team effort. So I dont think ill be content with just writing it, I would also want to design the characters, settings and the gameplay.

Yeah...animating would be a pain and it would be nice if there was a autoanimation (i think there is a solution but that still takes hours with all the rigging and stuffs).

  • Studying for my CPA currently. Been working in banking and financial fields most of my life. Its draining, doing all of this studying but I hope it works out in the end. I think I would to be in tax consulting or planning, so I'm not too sure if I should stay in the CPA course and venture out to being an enrolled agent. Either way, I should gain the knowledge I need to flexible in many settings.
