Something that is true, I saw in a video that originally they were thinking of it being about this older brother [somewhere in his 20's] who had a much younger sister. And that the game's opening would've been with this sister waking him up telling him about a 'strange man' in the garden or something. I really wish I could find that video again to be more exact on the details, especially since season 2 has come out that we've been getting this sibling thing with Luke and Clementine. It seems like the old concept got recycled on them.

But yeah, boy/girl I wouldn't have minded because a person's gender doesn't really matter to me, but the character and who they are inside. Although I will say I think it is refreshing that we get to play as a young girl in a video game and who is the main character as well, because aside from a few titles where something like that briefly happens [Ellie from The Last of Us] I've rarely seen that done before as the main lead, the last title for me being Ico [a real Classic btw if you haven't played it.]
