Why didnt cutting Lee's arm off save him, but it saved ___?

It saved Reggie! Anyone else notice that? Or am I missing something obvious?

    Lee waited too long. I would assume a few hours passed in the time between him getting bit and arriving at the morgue, and by then the virus had spread. Reggie had his arm removed by Mike almost instantly.

    Lee waited too long and the infection spread. You have to cut the appendage off Sarita-fast, otherwise it won't work.

    There's also the possibility that Lee died of blood loss considering he never did managed to properly seal the amputation. That could also be a reason.
