Clem - The Survivor or the Saint

edited May 2014 in The Walking Dead
What do you think about Clem's maturity and character development? It's clear that Telltale is making us to choose between keeping the naive and sympathetic Clem from season 1 and a much more cruel child.

Personally, I feel it's natural for Clem's personalities to grow colder and darker. She's a strong girl to start with, and as Carver said "The younger generation will have bigger balls than the adults in this world ever have, because they grow up with it and adapt to it." Clem has witnessed, or killed the person she loved the most, and she has seen countless people die because they couldn't take care of themselves in this chaotic world.

As of other characters, they don't see Clem as a kid anymore, episode 1 and 2 from season 2 has shown how tough Clem is, and in episode 3, she's the one taking care of all the risky parts while the "adults" all just sit and wait.

At the end, I chose to stay, it was a brutal scene but I didn't regret it, if it was Lee killing Carver just like back when Lee killed the brothers at the dairy farm, I would choose to leave and rather not let Clem see it. Yet, was is not Lee, he is not here to protect Clem anymore, and she has to struggle to survive all by herself.

How about you? Would you follow the darker path of personality setting up for Clem, and be a Survivor - or to stay true to her child-self and help people as much as possible even though it might get Clem killed at the end and to be remembered as a little Saint of hope?

  • It's true that the new generation surpasses the older generation but I don't want Clem to grow up to become the Carver of the new generation. What's the point of survival if you become worser than Carver? I don't want Clem to be naive but I want her to have some humanity left.

I'm going to try my best to keep Clem from going over the deep end as long as I can. She still cares about other people for me, puts her friends before herself, etc. but I have no illusion that sometimes it's going to be necessary for her to get a little harsher. I guess I want her to grow up to be what Carver COULD have been, not what Carver was.
