Stealing and lying in ep. 3

edited May 2014 in The Walking Dead
To start I gotta say that I liked this episode begging to end, but after giving it some major thought about how Clementine acted in this episode I realized that no matter what Clementine ends up stealing and lying in this episode. Now for my play-through from the start of season 1 to now was to always choose to be honest and never steal as is morally wrong, but when playing through episode 3 the thought never even crossed my mind what I was actually doing. I understood that it was for survival and to keep the game's story moving forward, but didn't realize that I may have been doing the morally wrong thing, since I want Clementine to grow up as a good person. Clementine seem to frown upon both lying and stealing in season 1, but now seems to be doing it by default in season 2, perhaps she is leaving her child like innocence behind. I am wondering if others felt the same way about what happened in this episode?

If you don't know what I am referring to it is when she lies to Troy about covering Luke's presence in the comic shop and stealing the walkie-talkies.

Well she has to lie and steal for her own good and for the group. Otherwise how do they get out?
  • Kill troy with his crossbow back in that room. It was 3 v 1.

Well she has to lie and steal for her own good and for the group. Otherwise how do they get out?

  • She stole the medical supplies back in Episode 1 too. And back in Season 1, she wanted to go with Lee to steal supplies from Crawford. It was out of necessity or served a greater good.

She's become more mature in her morality. Very young children tend to obey rules to the letter. "Don't steal. Don't lie. Ever. No matter what." As we get older we learn that there are exceptions to these rules. Times when it's far more immoral *not* to steal or *not* to lie.
  • I support her stealing and lying as long as it's for good intentions... like leaving a messed up group.
Kenny also supported it 110%, which was actually quite hilarious...
  • I have to wonder... What makes you think that lying to Carver and his group is morally wrong? They were clearly a bunch of morally bankrupt psychopaths.

Lying is usually a bad thing, but telling the truth in every situation, no matter what, isn't always the right choice. In fact, the way I see it, it would be morally wrong of you to tell the truth to Troy and get Luke caught, because you would have been deeply betraying one of the people who was trying to help you, in order to please someone who blatantly doesn't care and wants to use you as a slave.

I think Clem is smart enough to understand that in a survival situation, against a psychopath like Carver, you have to lie in order to escape.
  • Of course she's gonna steal and lie and even kill to survive. She's not a saint.

  • There's no need for you to compromise the plan as Clementine when that was obviously Luke's role.
  • Maturity doesn't always affect your morals; it's who you mature around. Your morals don't change by default right at the age of maturity. Besides, those two in Season 1 should be more considered scavenging than thievery. But, honestly, anyone in her position, would have most likely stole. It has nothing to do with morals, it's "These guys are crazy, and I have to use some of their stuff to get out of here."

  • My profile is an honest and optimistic play through as well, but this isn't one of those things that will affect Clementine in the long-run. It's stealing from those who are willing to kill one-armed men, there is clear justification in stealing from these people.

Well, the place is lead by a psychopath that wants to kill the weak, pretty much the same mantra of the nazis. It's not morally wrong if you do it to save your group from a serial killer.

So I think everything she did there is more than ok.
  • Why would you burn the body? Just hide that shit.

  • Yeah, that was dumb.

  • They do change though. Children become more adept at abstract reasoning when they get older. Prior to that, their morality relies much more heavily on reward and punishment or blind adherence concrete set of rules.

And by "back in Episode 1," I meant Episode 1 of Season 2. She stole supplies from the cabin group to stitch herself back up. And it was only scavenging because Crawford *happened* to be overrun when they got in. They went there with the intent of stealing medical supplies from a living community.

  • Similar to what I said about escaping Carver's camp, there is clear justification in stealing from Crawford (they let children, pregnant women, elderly, etc. die). Also, at the time of Episode 1 in Season 2, Clementine could have been classified as a prisoner of the cabin group, and broke out and stole in order to save herself (taking surplus medical supplies), so there is justification in that as well. Your morals don't always change, sometimes they do, but not always. Many morals, such as thoughts on thievery, can sometimes never change.

Lying to and stealing from people that are holding you hostage in order to escape is really one of the lesser crimes necessary to survive the Zombie Apocalypse. I wouldn't worry about it.

  • I'm guessing you forced a child to watch Kenny brutally murder someone, right? Pfff
