The demo can also be downloaded from Telltale's own website, in English or Spanish. (Scroll down to the CSI panel under Telltale Spotlight, on the left side of the screen.)
a) General glitches first. Sometimes, the voiceover doesn't show up. Such as when Nick 'says' "A detection tool would work better". I guess he says it telepathically? Telltale too lazy to get the actor back in? Second, the "magazine article" isn't... there. Click the "magazine article" in your evidence toolbar and NOTHING SHOWS UP. I hope this isn't crucial to the story. Because it doesn't work.
b) Very touchy fingerprint detection. Miss the tiniest spot on a fingerprint? It doesn't seem to MATTER that you can see it wholely, but your missing that pixel of the fingerprint that seems to matter. I spent 5 minutes holding the spray above a blatently obvious fingerprint before it registered. Thanks, devs!
c) Doesn't seem like the hints help. I'm stuck in the demo, and it gives me an overview of what to find in the games demonstration room. Ermmm... great? I already collected all that evidence. Now what? Absolutely nothing. The game doesn't want me to continue. There is NO POSSIBLE conversation or hotspot that I haven't tried, and the only piece of evidence not tagged is the damned partial from the phone... which SHOULD enter the computer but won't. Not to mention that whenever I ask about Maya's testimony, Nick tells me to "ask Brass about it", and no conversations open with Brass under any circumstance. Why have the option of hints when it doesn't actually help?
d) Previous CSI games allowed for skippable conversations by right clicking, something this game thoroughly lacks. I don't want to hear Nick say "The fingerprints don't match" fifty-billion times.
Not to mention plain design flaws and terrible graphics. If this demo is any indication, this is by far the worst CSI game to date. The interface is horrible (especially the green toolbar at the bottom, uggh. The 3D that has been toted by Ubi and Telltale looks like its circa 2001, and the character models (especially Ms. Nguyen) look nothing like people. Looks like Telltale used the bare minimum amount of polygons available.
You can skip dialogue by pressing the space bar.
If I may ask, what kind of video card do you have? Did you try changing the graphics quality in the game menu?
I ask because the game looks pretty good to me on certain computers, but not as good on my home computer (which has an Nvidia Geforce2 card... a pretty old card, admittedly). With a game like this, that can look very different on one computer to the next, it's helpful for us to know what kind of video card someone is using when they give feedback about the graphics.
Again, thanks for your comments... hearing what people do and don't like about our games is the only way we can improve upon them.
It left me wanting more - so I'll definately be picking the retail version up in a couple of days.
On a side note, I love the case you included in the demo. I must say that I am still one of those "comic book geeks" who is ticked off at "LZP" for cancelling "Fuzzy and Bill". In fact, one of those angry letters looks suspiciously like the one I left at mixnmojo after it's cancellation.
That's a bit harsh, don't you think? They're a newer company, this is their first CSI game, and yeah, I found the glitches too, but I usually found a way around them. For example, with the fingerprint problem you're having, in this game, the fingerprints, they don't automatically register. You need to tape-lift them. Just like in the show. And as for the "fingerprints don't match" problem:
a) Press the spacebar or;
b) don't try to compare two fingerprints that don't match fifty-billion times.
Try dragging the "damned partial from the phone", but start at a different angle.
Back to the fingerprints: hold the spray at a different angle. I found that worked very well for me, not only in the demo, but also in the actual game.
Your "general glitches" may have something to do with your computer settings. Telltale is not lazy, try resetting your settings.
So you see, there really is no need to be that rude. Give them a chance. They certainly deserve it for having the guts to release a demo to the biggest critics of all:
The fans.
P.S: Nobody, I repeat NOBODY has the right to be that rude to somebody. It's harassment. And it is certainly not appreciated. I may be a newer member, but I know what's appropriate and what's not. What you just did, blasting them for some glitches on the demo, that's not.
P.P.S: Erm, Emily, how do you figure out what kind of video card you have? Oh, I also found that if you set the game settings to "Low", it works better. My computer's a dinosaur too.
And to that last poster.. Butterflie - this is all about the GAME, I'm not harrassing anyone. The game is just not good and saying so is not harrassment in any way.
On a more positive note, Bone episode 2 is quite fun and tons better than the first one. It's not excellent or anything but it's good to see that Telltale is getting better.. I just wish they'd never made CSI
I had high hopes for Telltale and I bought Bone without even playing the demo, but I was very disappointed. Then with Bone ep.2 I feel they improved quite a bit but they're still not there yet.
I would really like for Telltale to become a high quality adventure game developer, but I'm not willing to overlook major faults in games just because they're a new developer with small budgets simply because I *want* to be a fan.
But we'll see when their next game is released.. if that one is mediocre too then I think a lot of people will be fed up with giving them the benefit of the doubt. Let's hope it won't be
Butterflie, one way to see what video card you have is to right-click My Computer, select Manage, and click on Device Manager on the left-hand side of the window that opens up. (It's under System Tools if you can't find it.) Then, on the right side of the window, click on Display Adapters.
But as you probably understand... I didn't think much of CSI at all.
But oh well - you've still not turned me away, keep improving the Bone games and I'll keep buying
I just hope a lot of people will buy the games even though so far they're not excellent so that you can get bigger budgets for future episodes. I need a new Grim Fandango or Monkey Island 2
Anyways, thanks, and I'm happy to know that TTG actually listens to it's customers concerns.
What is it about the previous games' graphics that you liked better? Are you specifically talking about the people? The environments?
It's not a trick question. This isn't the first comment I've seen along these lines, so I'm trying to nail down what it is about the other games' graphics that some people prefer.
I recently played around with this game on one of the computers in the office that has a fairly good video card, and was blown away by the lighting effects on the mobile crime scene van. If you pan back and forth on the van the reflection looks just like it would if you were looking at a car in an underground parking lot in real life. It's very cool and really makes me feel like I'm there in a way that the flatter graphics of the other CSI games never could.
Some games run a system test during installation that tells you how well a game will run for you, based on your specs. I wonder if something like that would be helpful for CSI, since a lot of the players will not have the latest and greatest computers. (Of course, once I've spent $30 on a game, I'm going to play it whether a system test tells me it'll look bad or not... but maybe that would at least help to set expectations?)
They're so stiff and their mouths barely move while talking.. it looks really, really fake and ugly.
If you had better models (a lot better), this game would not have that bad graphics. But in a game like this, characters are important so I think this is a big minus.
Thank you very much, Mickey. I'm really glad you enjoyed it.
Butterflie, thanks also for the support. Laffer and Fez do have a good point - the end result is usually what we expect consumers to grade us on. (Though it's really great to have loyal fan support too.)
We're proud of what we've accomplished, and feel it's an improvement over the previous products in many ways. We hope most people will enjoy it. Fortunately, with the demo, people can see if they like it or not.
However, we've got a lot of ideas on how to improve the product, if we get the opportunity to do another one. The feedback, whether it's presented positively or negatively, is valuable, and lets us know what's working for our consumers and what's not.
I don't regret buying it, even though I've never watched a single CSI episode. I just didn't have my expectations set too high. I knew this wasn't an adventure game in the classic sense. I just had a bit of fun hunting for the killers.
Also, the last case was by far the best, since there were a lot more people to talk to and locations to explore.
All in all, I'd love for you guys to make another CSI game, but please, please, please... check your grammar. "Its" was spelt as "it's" almost throughout the game... while this may not be a problem to most people, it annoyed me to no end. And also, no more vase puzzles please. And yeah, the character models could have been made a bit better I suppose, but I thought they were okay. I'm sure that Telltale can only get better and better as we move along. Keep up the good work.
"Looks like this area is clear, way to be thorough" X-(
When I was looking in that car for the gun and stuff, he kept saying that ALL the time.. zoom in on an area and he says it.. zoom back out to the car overview screen and he says it again. And when you pick up things he sometimes says it OVER the stuff that is supposed to be said. It's incredibly annoying!
The environment is good, overall the settings are very well done. The problem is indeed the character modelling. Some characters, even on a good graphics card, look blocky. Other characters look very cartoony... this is not 'Bone', this is a game based on the most popular show on television, and the game is expected to show some of this realism. The character models of Dark Motives looked "truer" (for lack of better wording) than in this game.
Also, really, what's the point of the mobile lab van? Sure, it'll help in real life. But in game, it takes just as many clicks to reach the real lab as it does the mobile lab. To me, it looks as if it was just added in because of a sponsorship deal with GMC.
Also, the tacky green toolbar just has to go. On the note of interface though, I do like the new circular tool to access detection and collection.
Cheers.
Like the fact that you can turn off some of the help in that difficulty level screen thing.. in the first game you could not do that (I don't know about the two other CSI games released before the Telltale version though).
Being able to look at items from different angles is also cool (and also not possible in the first CSI game).
Based on the demo, the game isn't any worse than the previous CSI games, it's in fact a little better.
But since the previous CSI games were really bad, that doesn't help too much :P
But when I saw how bad the first one is, I have to say that the Telltale version is at least an improvement over that game (based on the demo).
But I can't understand why Telltale wanted to continue this crap series unless it was for the money only (CSI is very well known so).. and if it was only for the money, I support that decision. Anything to bring in the cash required to finish the Bone series
