How is "Everyone" Infected?
Just like Ben says, everyone is apparently infected with the zombie virus in the Walking Dead Universe. But are only people in America infected? Is the whole world infected? What I don't get is did everyone get infected with this virus just recently, because if not then wouldn't people would have been becoming walkers for a long time? And why is the virus only triggered on death. If anyone could clear this up, I'd be grateful

Well I think it has never been explained fully, and I think it is an air virus so it would affect everyone unless they had a gas mask or something.
Maybe it was a disease that got lose from a lab or something?
Maybe it will be explained later
I think it spreads through the air. Maybe when you die and your immune system shuts down you just turn.
the virus is only triggered on death because there's nothing controlling the brain anymore, make the virus able to get to the brain, and then making the person a zombie. (or walker)
TL:DR since the brain has no control anymore, the virus can take over.
Oh I get it. Viruses multiply and then spread to other cells. If they take over every cell in the body, then the entire body is like one big virus. Then, instead of hopping to another body to take that one, it just uses the body it already has to literally go and multiply by making more zombies/viruses.
Maybe the infection spread years before the apocalypse but at first it wasn't harmless. Then it had years to infect everyone on the planet and then maybe for some reason it all mutated and then everyone started coming back from the dead.
" How is "Everyone" Infected? "
Its somewhat complicated and an unknown area in the Walking Dead universe. In the comics, I don't think it's ever been shown or implied that the rest of the world is even infected, whether the military is doing a better job protecting people, etc.
There are many theories that other countries don't have the infection yet, and America were one of the first people to get it, thus these other countries cannot rescue the survivors due to their psychologically damaged minds which could be a danger in a normal civilized life, and the fact that they'd just be bringing the infection to other countries. This theory also somewhat implies/states that this means other countries can work on the cure, and when they make it (probably in a few years) they'll test it on America.
Some say that other countries have the infection just as bad perhaps even worse in some cases, and that the whole world is like how The Walking Dead is like now. Others state whilst this is true, other states/countries could be better protected, which explains the minimal amount of states that are really discussed in The Walking Dead. There's only been Georgia, Virginia, North Carolina, etc. Though other states have been mentioned as parts of characters origin, such as California and Florida.
In the television show (which is non-canon to both the comic books and video games) it is clearly stated in the season finale of the first ever season, that other countries are facing the apocalypse, and that 'France' was close to a cure but then they were taken down due to the apocalypse (Another theory states that only France's communications were taken down but they made a cure, and they're trying to resolve things in the background but that's only a theory).
So now that we've gotten out the way how some countries are dealing with the infection, HOW this came to be is once again another unknown aspect of The Walking Dead universe. Kirkman says he's not focusing on the actual disease as that's not the point of the story.
But nevertheless i would presume the virus is airborne, which explains how it reached everyone so fast. It may be a virus, I say this because it'd make sense if it was virus, to need us dead to take over because our immune system would constantly fight it if we're living. So we die, our immune system shuts down stops producing antibodies and we die.
Its airborne and it remains dormant in the body until death where the virus would reanimate the dead brain cells.
Pretty sure it's the bacteria in the air. Otherwise, I got no clue.
