The Fabletown Government
So is there honestly a reason as to why the Fabletown government wasn't doing that great of a job? Why would Crane go out of his way to deny people at the front door, from the community or even letters from Fables? I don't get it, because no offense the job seems like it'd be quite easy. Now I'd imagine itd be very stressful trying to aid all these Fables, but not too difficult.
Could someone explain why there was a lack of support from the government to begin with?

Crane got himself put under the finger of the Crooked Man. From what we've seen, he's all about control. If you go ahead of Tim, and wait long enough, you can hear him mention that he thinks he is going to have the Sheriff under his control. Since he had Crane, he could have been forcing him to mistreat the people, making more people go to the Crooked Man for help. That's just my theory.
That's an interesting theory actually. The simple one is Crane is just bad at his job and cares more about having his bit of power than helping the citizens. Snow, as his assistant can't go over his head and fix things. Now, maybe she can do something more. Running their community is not as easy as you think, when they have to expend so much time, money and energy hiding from Mundies.
Because Snow isn't in charge yet.
Actually, I think Crane was deliberately sabotaging. Not only was he corrupt and embezzling money, it seems like he's purposefully making Fables want to go to the Crooked Man for the support they need.
But what about King Cole, some may ask? He's incredibly lazy and negligent. Though he's not actually a a bad guy, he avoids work and delegates his duties as much as possible. This is why it's the deputy that more or less runs things.
