Time Limits

I know I just registered, but I have one concern.

What's the point of having a depleting bar during a conversation tree? That doesn't give us enough time to think.

By the way, I only saw a walkthrough of episode 1. I'm just waiting for this season/series to get a retail release. And I didn't play The Walking Dead. I'm not into horror.

the depleted bar is the whole point of making you think and answer on your toes...the point is that in real life you wouldn't stand there for 5 minutes at a time waiting to answer someone...and it makes the game more interesting to see all the choices you made come to play when it is all said and done.

without the bar, it's let suspenseful and meaningful, imo.

  • Yeah, the bar's supposed to make you think quickly and pick the first thing that comes to your mind, not agonize over something for 5 minutes. Don't like a choice, you can replay later. There's so many choices in the game that you can't possibly see everything the first time so Telltale wants you to replay at least once.

If you absolutely need more time, hit spacebar. It pauses the game.

It sort of depends on how you play. If you approach each decision thinking "What would I do?" or "What do I want to do?" then the depleting bar increases tension and forces you to think on your feet, which can help with immersion.

If you have a character in mind separate from yourself, though, and approach each decision with something more complicated and thoughtful, such as "What would my Bigby realistically think right now, considering a, b, c and x?" and try to determine his course like that, you likely won't have enough time to decide what would or would not be in his character before you're forced to pick the "..." option.

Personally, I pause the game every time I'm uncertain or dealing with issues that aren't completely obvious.

Gameplay-wise, a limited time frame for Bigby to respond in means that events around him can go on in real-time while he decides, which adds to the realism.

  • So you think that Telltale Games will include a depleting bar in the next Sam & Max game in every conversation tree? Yep, those guys still remember that series.

And thanks for the pausing idea Mr. Off_Ground.
