Does Anyone Else Feel The Same Way About Season 2?

edited July 2014 in The Walking Dead

I know many of you have probably noticed this, but I will post it anyway. In Season 1 there were a lot of breaks where you could talk to ANYONE in your whole entire group and get to know them and become personal with them. You could ask them personal questions or you could decide not to talk to anyone at all. This built a lot of characterization for every character and made you really feel like you know them. This made their deaths and just their overall character a lot more important and emotional. Since the storytelling and emotional side of the game is most important to The Walking Dead Game in my opinion, it is really disappointing to not see this in Season 2. In the current season, there has NEVER been a time where Clementine has had the ability to truly go around and personally talk to everyone. The only time where it was close to this was when they just made it across the bridge in Episode 2 after Nick shot Matthew. But even then you could only talk to Nick and Alvin and you really didn't sense any bonding.

When Carlos died at the end of Episode 3, I did not really even feel sad because I never really got to bond or talk with him like Lee did in Season 1. Just a few moments before writing this I forgot that Carlos even did die at the end of Episode 3 because it just didn't seem that important to me since I didn't get to connect with him.

Overall, this really makes my experience with Season 2 much less enjoyable than Season 1. A major role in Season 1 and The Walking Dead in general is bonding with the characters and feeling a personal connection with each and every one of them. However, in Season 2 I don't really feel a bond with any characters at all because the game simply has not really allowed us to.

Another thing that was a major part that made Season 1 incredible is that there were puzzles. Now, I know not everyone enjoyed the puzzles, however, I felt like it added to the game because it gave the player a minor challenge. A problem, in my opinion, with Season 2 is that it is not difficult in the slightest and there is no roaming around or any challenges to solve.

For Example, in Episode 4 of Season 1, everyone split up to find different supplies in Crawford. What was awesome about that was it opened up different parts of the story, and gave little challenges. The player could find an optional third tape where it was revealed that Molly was sleeping with the Doctor to get insulin for her Diabetic sister. You could call Molly out on this, and it would end with Lee and her possibly bonding. I felt like these types of puzzles/challenges really added to the game.

Now, I know that Season 2 is completely different since Clementine is the protagonist and that it isn't logical for a child to be solving puzzles when there are a group of adults around. But at the same time the group had Clementine fix the windmill in Episode 2 of Season 2 when there were 3 or 4 adults around. Also, just because she is a little girl does not mean that she cannot go around and talk to different people and bond with them.

Sorry for making this so long but I had to get these few problems off my chest because they have been slowly bothering me through Season 2. I still think that Season 2 is amazing, however, if it had these few things that I listed above, I think it could be much better. Thank You for listening to me ramble, and I cannot wait for Episode 4 :)

  • I agree. I do still love season two, though.

  • One of the reasons I loved Season one is because of the character development, even if some only appeared in 2 episode we still got to know them and get attached to them.

  • With Carlos I don't think we were meant to care that much, it was more about developing Sarah's character.
Lets be honest they couldn't do much more with Sarah with Carlos still around but with him gone they could write some interesting stuff for Sarah.

  • I love season 2, but I agree. I often STILL forget that Carlos is dead. I also tend to forget that Sarita exists or that Alvin has bit the dust. I just haven't been able to bond with most of these characters. The people we get to talk to are Luke, Kenny and Sarah, in that order. Everyone else just fades into the background.

So yeah, I just really want to TALK to these people. I want to know who I'm trusting to have my back here.

  • I hear what you're saying man I totally agree but when Carlos died I really was touched by it , technically I was sad and can't forget it.

I was more shocked than anything, and when he went down everything hit the fan so to speak so i really wasn't thinking about him. I like Season 2, but i wish that the other characters had a bigger role, to me it seems like this entire Season has revolved around Kenny/Clem. When Alvin died i felt nothing, he said maybe four lines to Clementine.

He also called Nick a killer, which made me dislike him more.

  • I've been thinking the exact same thing ever since I played episode 1 of season 2. I mean there is literally no character interaction AT ALL like the first season. Not to mention there are literally NO PUZZLES at all. I know you play as a little girl instead of a grown man (Lee) so that might be the logic as to why there is no character interactions or no puzzles but I highly disagree. Hopefully in episodes 4 & 5 we will see more aspects like season 1.

  • I really didnt care for Alvin when he died.

  • I still care a lot about characters in season 2 still, I care about Clementine, Kenny, Luke and Sarah and I cared about Alvin (RIP).

When Alvin died I teared up a little bit, but when Carlos, Reggie, and Walter died I honestly didn't really care; I think it was a lot easier to get attached to the characters in season 1 than in season 2.

  • "but guys this is because its part of the store, please understand"

  • I was upset when Pete, Alvin, and Carlos died.

  • I wanna know if Sarah had a boyfriend or how her school life was and what she liked to do before the apocalypse.

Lots more from other characters too

  • Yeah that would of been awesome to get more insight on Sarah's life before the walkers. That's why I think Season 1 has so far dominated Season 2 because of the character interactions and info you can learn on everybody simply by talking to them. Season 2 has none of that and if you do actually to somebody its only a choice question with time ticking down. Season 1 you actually had 3 questions you could ask everybody without a timer and I loved that. I just wish they would bring the hubs back and the puzzles that would add to the length of each episode and the puzzles would add a little challenge. The only thing even remotely close to a puzzle in Season 2 so far is when Clem had to flick her lighter simply by pressing a button and grabbing a key and putting it in the slot to turn the wind generator off a 4 year old could of figured that out.

TBH, I have not been liking season 2, In season 1 it made sense that Lee would have to do alot of the work for the group since he was obviously the strongest one of the group and the other members of the group were still capable of doing things (E.G Episode 2 when either Carley or Doug helped you fight off one of the 2 brothers) but in season 2 everyone relies on the 13 year old and can't do anything for them selves (apart from Kenny and Luke until episode 3 where he changed into being kind of selfish for no reason).

This really took a toll on the story for me since choosing to leave certain characters to die took less a toll on me and Most of the time I just left them (For Example: Season 1: Ben, I killed him and throughout episode 5 I thought back to how it might have been if he stayed alive But Season 2:I just left Sarah and I didn't really care about the convo afterwards about it and nothing felt changed about me or made me regret my decision).

Also the fact that the Arvo Cliffhanger felt tacked on (and very predictable before that point) to try to create tension for the final episode, It was done well with the Guy at the End of season 1 because it was made unsure in season 1 episode 2 what happened to the family who owned it and it created tension throughout the series with the mystery of who was on the walkie talkie that Clem had. Arvo was added 20 minutes from the end of episode 4 and it was obvious why he was kept alive.
