TWAU/TWD episode length problem

edited July 2014 in The Wolf Among Us

So episodes four and five were barely over an hour, because Telltale uses the one sitting playthrough excuse. Yet now the tests for TWD episode four have finished, and guess what? The episode is around 2 hours long:

and now, with information about the scenes which were cut from Wolf's finale (almost finished, but locked anyway!) are we supposed to believe that TWAU was treated equally as TWD when it wasn't the case?

TWAU could have been so much better, but I think it was rushed to make way for TWD. The thing is, TWAU still beats TWD season 2 by a large margin in terms of story (so far), even with cuts and rewrites. I know that Walking Dead is Telltale's major franchise, but by focusing on its weak sequel they almost ruined TWAU.

Comments

  • The wolf among us was clearly rushed out because they gave themselves too much to do and they are announcing all these new projects, so they made the final two episodes of wolf 1 hour long to rush it out and focus on this, the success of the walking dead season 1 got to them and all they care about now is releasing several new projects in a short space of time rather than focusing on one game at a time and making lengthy and the best that it can be.

  • What was cut from the TWAU finale?

A scene in the business office where you could talk to the mirror and see how every character was doing at the end.

Boatmaster got them partially working and took screenshots, and Mikonreborn showed them in the comments section on his Youtube video.

  • Its 101 minutes long, isnt that not much longer?

  • I like TWD S2 more. TWAU could have been way better if it wasn't all about Walking Dead or Borderlands. Like come on Telltale! advertise the games you already have out!

TWAU episodes surely would've benefited from those extra 30 minutes. I think the point that the OP is trying to make is that the TWD episodes have been consistent in regards to length(around 90 minutes) while in TWAU case, things started going downhill in length after episode two released.

I am inclined to believe the obvious rewrite that occurred had a role to play in regards to the length, but at the same time I can't help but to agree with the OP. TWAU could have been a whole lot better than it already is if the episodes were just a little longer....even with the rewrite.

Compare that to TWAU episode four's 67 minutes and episode five's 65 minutes (at least these were my playthrough times) - which is a problem, since the time to beat these two episodes combined (132 minutes) is only slightly longer than completing episode 1 ALONE.

So episodes 4 and 5 are likely to be shorter than TWD episode 4 by 30 minutes each, ONE HOUR in total - so, in other words, it's as if we were robbed of one episode of TWAU (since episodes 4 and 5 take an hour to complete).

And while Telltale explains that they are aiming at a one-sitting experience, they are still able to maintain the hour-and-a-half mark for TWD (or even longer, as we can see here). They created an additional scene in TWAU to give closure to most of the supporting cast only to cut it because... well, we'll never know why.

I do realize that TWAU was probably not as profitable as TWD, but I don't see it as a reason to sideline the former in favour of the latter, and I'm afraid that's what happened here.

  • I really did like the season finale, but I do have the feeling that Telltale rushed the whole thing together in an effort to just get it over with so they could focus on one thing at a time.

  • They're split into different teams. So the quality of TWD shouldn't affect TWAU

  • If that's the case, then they shouldn't have used the one-sitting excuse for TWAU, and they shouldn't have excluded the magic mirror scene and Bufkin from the finale.

  • And yet the rewrite/delay of TWAU episode 2 was also the reason for the delay of TWD episode 2. TWD didn't have any rewrites and script changes, so the only reason was that people working on it were transfered to work on TWAU because of the complete overhaul of the script (and I guess a lot of the already existing locations/scenes were scrapped and had to be done from scratch).
