Racism in Amid the Ruins

My argument for seeing some hints or racism whether ill intent or just to be comedic:

The Confederate jacket, as well as how Luke talks about Mike, going on and saying that mike has demanded acceptance (which he hasn't. Mike is humble, helpful, and willing). Luke says mike has "no right" and has to "earn" his acceptance. Why Mike of all characters? It would have been better had he said that about Kenny seeing as though they already had a feud. There was def one more thing that struck me but am I just over reacting because Im "urban" or does telltale throw little sneaky stuff in there like the kenny/lee urban line?

  • I say an overreaction

I think any "racism" is not meant to be taken this way, it's probably not made to be in that way or it's should be taken lightly or as a joke, I'd say it's probably just an overreaction on your part :P and I thought Ken said Clem had no right not Mike.

  • When exactly did luke hate on Mike? I really cant remeber it.

Also I'm sorry but that jacket stuff was ridiculous, who really cares anymore. Rebecca needs to keep warm, she was right it hardly matters anymore

  • Ok there was no racism in this episode. The only hint of racism i ever saw is kenny in episode two about lee picking locks.

  • Overreacting. They are in the south and were at a museum about the civil war. The south was confederate hence the jacket. I think they threw it in there to show how even in the end of the world that petty human problems could still potentially remain. Also, I think Luke is still skeptical of a big, strong man that he just met. For one, what did mike do to get put in the "dungeon," is he trust worthy (or will he throw someone to the walkers to save his own ass), and as a man most men want to be the alpha and mike threatens Luke maybe. So that makes Luke question Mike as a person, regardless of his color. Luke has been skeptical of Kenny since they met.

  • Fuck Luke ! He didn't do a shit in this episode and he tried to insult Mike ! Sorry but if he gets shot , i actually don't think i'll be that sad..

  • If anything in the episode had some unfortunate implications, it was the fact that the characters who died were three women of color (and, y'know, Nick, who some people view as racially ambiguous, like Carley), leaving Mike and Clementine to be the only nonwhite characters in the game. And I have a strong feeling Mike won't last long.

Luke's skepticism of Mike was weird and unfounded but I doubt it was racially charged. Maybe if Mike snuck up to that observation deck for a romp with him, he would've felt a bit differently...

  • Just a theme guys lol. Themes are common in stories. Race is a common theme in many stories. I mean look at America lol

  • I thought that this thread was gonna be about the Russians XD

  • Anything can be viewed as racist (or sexist) depending on what lens you're viewing it through. The Russians at the end could be viewed as racist given the Ukraine and now MH17 events. Bonnie's now the only woman left besides Clem in a group of primarily bull headed males. That could be viewed as sexist. Mike being the only one that appears to have been shot at one point and being black could be viewed as racist. Why does only Mike have a scar? Why didn't any in the cabin group have one? Kenny does NOW but he didn't have one before. The fact that black men are more likely to be jailed for crimes and Lee was going to prison in the first episode of season one could be viewed as racist.

Fact is, stress can do funny things to people. Luke could have been a racist before everything went to hell for all we know and he's been trying hard to hide it because you can't be picky in the zombie apocalypse, but it's still poking through from time to time. Given that Telltale had Lee as the main protagonist in season one and now Clem shows they're attempting to be accommodating. Jabs are expected regardless of what the jab is about. While some are certainly in poor taste to us, you have to put yourself into the survivor's shoes. What are they going to do about it? Go to the police to report racism? Probably would make sense for Telltale to throw in jabs at the white characters, but given Luke got caught with Jane, Kenny can be a bit brash, etc, I'd say it's fairly balanced. The color characters get the racial remarks while the white ones are jackasses. Mike's a good guy despite the racial remarks. I'd say it'd be more racist if Mike was a complete dick, stole from the group, beat Bonnie, and then ran off. If Carver were black (for instance), I'd say it were racist. Notice every human enemy in the series seems to be white? None of the colored guys have really been bad thus far. If anything, they've all been good guys (Lee, Alvin, Mike). Rebecca's the only questionable one but her situation is subjective, too.

  • First of all i don't think Luke said that stuff to Kenny that he said to Mike because Kenny isn't really part of Luke's group. In-fact in my play-through i think Kenny is ranked higher than Luke in the group we have now mainly because i keep siding with Kenny alot. As for Mike well he is the newest member of the group and Luke didn't seem to know who Mike was in episode 3 which means they have most likely just met. Besides Luke has been friendly to Clementine, Rebecca and Alvin, So no i don't think Luke is racist.

  • You sir, had the best response. Someone give this man a cookie

  • Luke probably only said that because he was the last to meet Mike-- When they escape. It's hard to trust people during the apocalypse.
