"Because we're friends." "No, we're not."

After you save Sarah from the trailer, she asks you why you did it. One of the options is to say that you did it because you're friends with her, which she denies. Initially I thought it was pretty harsh; I didn't go full on pink-promise but wasn't a jerkass to her either. On reflection though I think it was very clever of Telltale; our relationship wasn't friendship so much as protector and ward. Does it imply she was more savvy than we thought, that she knows she's a burden without her dad? What does she say if you did pinky-promise friendship with her?
