Gabriel Knight 2 - English subtitles patch
Have you ever been annoyed at the lack of subtitles in GK2?
I just finished writing English subtitles for the game, and using a patch by a very cool guy called kelmer, I could implement them in the game.
All I had to do was replace the Spanish subtitles in kelmers patch with English subtitles.
It was still quite a bit of work though - I had to extract all the messages from the game (they are in there, just not displayed) and copy and paste them all into these message files in the patch.
Also - the game does not contain any subtitles for videos, so I had to write all of those from scratch by playing the game and writing down everything they say. Had I known just how much is said in videos, I would probably never have bothered
Anyway, there are two GIGANTIC drawbacks -
* speech while viewing inventory items is disabled (yes, even when reading letters you might have in your inventory). It was like this in the patch I use for this, and I have no idea how to fix it. It would be really cool if someone could find a way to correct this!
* only works with the Windows version. Again, if anyone can fix this, it would be awesome!
Another minor drawback is that the game does not change subtitles very often, resulting in sometimes displaying big boxes of text, like this -
It's very rarely that bad, though.
Also, keep in mind that I wrote down every line from every video - meaning that there *will* be errors here and there in the text. I know the German text has a lot of errors, I don't know German.
If you play the game using this patch, please write down any error you see (both what it says and what should be said), so I can correct it.
Oh, and after you install it, you might have to edit the config file (RESOURCE.WIN) to specify your CD drive letter. It's at the very bottom of the file.
Finally, a few lines are still in Spanish (only unimportant stuff like the 'Change disc' screens).

The lack of subtitles in GK2 didn't bother me, but I just wanted to chime in and say this is one of my all time favorite games. I had such a crush on Von Glower.
I won't spoil anything for people not having played the game, but I always find myself wanting to end the game differently (choose differently from what Gabriel does).

One of my all time fav games, if not the best!
It's also compatible with the DOS version now, which is a huge improvement.

I haven't tested this version yet, if anyone wants to, that'd be great!
By the way, I hope you downloaded the updated version posted in another post in this thread, and not the one linked in the opening post.
I updated the link in the opening post now to the correct one.
This is my all time favorite adventure game (all Lucasarts and Telltale adventure games are a close second! ), so I was wondering if it's possible to obtain the "raw" English script you used, to make other language patches available. I'm Hungarian, and would love to make a fan translation of the game (just finished one for Loom FM Towns).
Thanks, and congrats again!
Well... I wrote the lines down and entered them into the text resource files.. so I don't have a textfile with all the lines.
However - get a Sierra resource viewer and you can open every text file... and then replace the English lines with whatever you like.
(Sorry for the late reply, I wasn't on the net this week)
I found a Sierra Resource Viewer (SV Version 1), that allows me to export the .msg files into a text file, which are easy to edit. I can't however save the translated text as an .msg file.
(I found a resource editor, called SCI Studio, but that doesn't recognize the GK2 .msg files.)
Could you please tell me how to edit AND save/reinsert the text?
Many many thanks in advance!
EDIT - I just remembered the name of the tool while out having a cigarette
The tool is TraduSCI, it can be downloaded here -

Just wanted to thank you again for all the help, I finished the Hungarian translation (still need to go through it once more to correct typos, etc.). It'll be a Christmas present to my cousin, who loved the game when we played it way back in '96, and after the holidays I'd probably like put it up for download, properly crediting everyone else whose work I used, of course.
There's just one thing: whenever the player is inspecting a written text in the game (like the letters/descriptions in the museum), the subtitles won't show up. This is strange, since the text is in the .msg files, and I've translated them.
I understand that this is not a problem for the English subtitle patch, since there's not much point in putting subtitles for written text, but it is a problem for other language versions. I tried the Spanish patch as well, but the results were the same.
Do you have any idea how to make the translated text appear in these screens as well? If not, I'll probably make a supplementary .pdf with these translations (fortunately the problem is limited to the Ludwig and Wagner museums, along with a couple of small, but less important instances (like the Huber's note about the car).
Thank you again for everything, couldn't have done it without your help!
Yeah, me too. I'd love a novelised version of GK3, or of GK4 for that matter, if it never gets made.
I bought both books a couple of years ago off Amazon, both second hand though. The Beast Within is a much easier read though, I think the Sins of the Fathers translates to literally from the game.
