This is a pet peeve of mine too. It's easy to become fond of video game characters when they get a lot of backstory and fleshing out, and playing the game yourself makes it a completely different experience. I first watched someone play TWD on Youtube; when Lee's death came, I felt sad, but I didn't cry. However, when I got the game and finished it, I bawled like a baby. This is why I love TWD - the characters feel realistic. I highly recommend playing the Mass Effect trilogy if you want a similar experience.
But yeah, don't bring this sort of thing up with your parents. Or anyone who doesn't play video games, for that matter.
