why not zombies?

why do the characters call them walkers or lurkers? Haven't they heard of the word zombies? almost everyone uses another concept of the word "zombie"... just why?

  • In The Walking Dead universe, "zombies" never existed, in the media sense. There were no books, movies, or any type of media or information about any creature like the zombies we know in our universe. So thus that's why they're so shocked and unprepared for these type of creatures, as well as calling them walkers, lurkers, monsters, etc.

  • Sometimes the writers accidentally call them "zombies" in both the comic and the video game. It's just a simple error, nothing more.

Wow, thanks for explaining it to us.

  • Very few games/movies/tv shows actually acknowledge that fictional zombies were a thing in their universe before zombies sprung up on them. I can only think of one game where they actually address the fact that they're zombies, actually.

That, and a lot of times they can't technically be zombies, because zombies are reanimated dead people by the creator's definition. Like, people coming out of the grave, rather than infected by a disease, etc.

  • Frankly, I think it's a silly idea and a cliche. It'd be nice for a serious zombie story to actually have the characters acknowledge the tropes of the genre, rather than have us go through the same charades of them being really inept and out of touch with how zombies work.

  • Agreed. It was actually really refreshing in that game when one of the characters pointed out that they were totally zombies
