Why he was shot.
So in the beginning of ATR, Nick is shot in the shoulder by Tavia. Thirty minutes later, Clem and Jane find Nick dead in a fence. The interesting thing being, he didn't appear to have died from the gunshot, instead having a bite mark on his neck, and what seems to be a broken leg. This brings the question, what was the point in him being shot in the shoulder?
I have a theory of my own, remember how Luke said he couldn't pick up Sarah because of being beaten by Carver? I think that Nick was originally going to survive to the trailer (if he had been saved), and they had him be shot in the shoulder as a reason why he couldn't pick up Sarah, but for some reason, this was changed before the final episode was released, but Nick being shot was left in.
I honestly really enjoyed ATR, but I believe it was originally going to have a vastly different story, another piece of evidence that points to this, is Eddie in the thumbnail. If you noticed something else that seemed weird, or changed/out of place, post it in the comments.

NICK DESERVED BETTER
I think he was bitten, because if you didn't save him in episode 2, you see the first Walker looking just like others, but if Nick appears in episode 4 as a Walker, it's because he was bitten, the first Walker Clementine attacks has blood on the mouth.
I think Arvo and his group was originally going to be Eddie and his group. But Telltale couldn't justify a drug user not sharing medical stuff so they changed everything. haha
I didn't think of that, good theory.
I agree, there's definitely a lot of things off that make it sound like they rewrote it.
So why the hell was Nick's role played down? What was the reason behind that?
Maybe telltale bit off more than they could chew programming wise? I know telltale has a fairly large team now, but it doesn't seem I possible to me.
Maybe... I wonder if there was a scheduling issue with Brian Bremer (Nick's voice actor)? His twitter implies he's been kind of busy lately with another project. But who knows.
RIPNICK
For Uncle Pete!
I think that Nick was originally going to be a double determinant, where if you chose to convince Sarah to leave the trailer park, Nick would end up boosting Jane and get devoured by Walkers, but if you left Sarah, Nick would escape with you.
on some peoples playthroughs the walker didn't have blood on it's mouth but they did not save nick in their playrhrough
in my playthrough i saved nick and the blood was there so it's safe to assume nick was bitten
I HATE TELLTALE SO MUCH THEY RIPPED APART SOMETHING I LOVED SOVMUCH AND DRAINED WHAT HOPE REMAINED. and my tears and happiness
Maybe the gunshot atracted walkers because of the blood?
The gunshot made him weaker and because of that he couldn't defend himself and got bit.
Thumbnails are deceiving
Telltale really needs to get their schedule under control then. They should be aware when stuff like this is going to negatively affect their story. I personally would rather wait an extra month or two.. or three... or four etccc
Hell why do they even need rewrites in the first place? Why would they even change something like that around in the first place? With the choice to be predictable but a good solid story, or unpredictable with a story that makes no sense and is totally unsatisfied, which is the better choice?
The fans will remember that.
Your theory on him not being able to pick up Sarah seems reasonable. To add onto that that it helps explain how he was killed by walkers (gun shot wounds makes it harder to fight back) and how walkers got to him in the first place (blood=walker bait).
I would be okay with that. That would have been a decent death for Nick.
I'm just guessing, but it feels like the story was somewhat established, the writers of episode 4 were ready, but when episode 3 they found out they were handed a shit sandwich in terms of the narrative. They did what they could to try and salvage it.
People say that you'll either see Nick or a random zombie on the fence........
I have 2 separate play through's going, one on PS3 and one on Vita.
On Ps3, I saw Nick. On Vita, there was no one on the fence, Clem and Jane just moved on through it. Hmm...
What I mean is, it didn't add to anything. It didn't cause Nick's death, and it was never mentioned.
