Dave Grossman leaves TTG. Same as Mike Stemmle. Jake&Sean too. Why is everyone leaving?

Why is everyone leaving?

Maybe this is due to TTG focusing only on "Choice and Consequence" adventures and "RATED M for MATURE" projects?
And drifting away too much from classic adventure formula?

  • Aww, that's awfully depressing. :(

    How did you find out?

    Twitter. :(

So TTG doesn't have much people left from old Lucasarts days, right? :/

Yeah, that's really too bad. I was hoping to see a pilot program type project that let Dave Grossman do some puzzles again. I really enjoy those.

I hope Dave still intends to make some games in the future. It makes me sad to think there might not be any more Grossman games.

There’s very little of the old design team still at Telltale. That’s a real bummer. At least Mark Darin’s still at Telltale (as far as I know).

  • I'd love to see Grossman and Stemmle join Camp Santo. That would be pretty interesting to see.

I don't think the new Campo Santo game is in their frame of mind right now.... I think that Stemmle and Grossman are more on the humor/comedy side.
And after the flop of Broken Age I don't think adventures will be the future of Double Fine.

So I can only hope for them the new Sierra department....
(but my truly TRULY forbidden wish would be a game in the Wadjet Eye Games pixel-art style...)

  • Oh god no! Why is everybody leaving?!!

  • I think it's safe to say now that the current Telltale resembles the guys who gave us all the adventure games we loved in name only.

  • Telltale Games was started from a group of people who left LucasArts Games around ~2004 or so. Dave Grossman was one of the more prominent Telltale staff members who was previously from LucasArts games. Prior to Walking Dead, Telltale focused more on niche comedy games inspired by classic LucasArts point and click adventure games, and Dave Grossman had a notable influence on several of the games.

Just as newer Telltale fans were sad to hear Jake Rodkin and Sean Vannaman (lead designers/writers for Walking Dead: Season 1) left, some of the older Telltale fans are disappointed to hear other notable Telltale staff members are leaving as well.

Wikipedia has a pretty good list of games they all worked on (Jake Rodkin, Sean Vanaman, Dave Grossman)

Jake and Sean weren't from LucasArts like Dave Grossman was, but they all had notable influences on Telltale's older games. Additionally, Jake also interacted with a lot of the users on the forums back in Telltale's older days.

Telltale doesn't really do collaborations with other game studios unless it involves Telltale making a story-based game from an already existing game franchise. They worked with LucasArts to make a Monkey Island game (which was an old LucasArts series) and they are currently working with Gearbox to make Tales from the Borderlands.

  • Hmm, interesting point. Granted, I could still see Jake and Sean do a good comedy game (since they worked on Wallace and Gromit, Monkey Island, Sam and Max: Devil's Playhouse), but you are probably right that Stemmle and Grossman would prefer comedy.

Speaking of that Sierra division, I wonder why they retracted the license from Telltale if they were still planning on handing out franchises to other indie developers anyways? I mean, I know it probably wasn't a good fit for Telltale's current vision and all, but I'd still like to be a fly on the wall when they were discussing that.

  • well isn't the walking dead an existing game franchise??? im just saying I love the episodes that Vannaman and breckon wrote. and of course Rodkin I just basically love all series episodes. and I have seen that breckon and vannaman hang, so I mean why not? im sure he probably had to advise Nick when he was named the head for the project. and can you imagine the two writing all of S3 themselves???

The game series and the AMC TV show are both based off of an existing comic series. The AMC TV show boosted the series' popularity, and it was around that time that Telltale's Season 1 released which gave the game a leg up. By "game franchise," I mean something that started off as a game. Most of Telltale's games are based off of existing franchises from other mediums, and even original concepts such as Puzzle Agent or Poker Night incorporate the franchises of other people.

  • oh ok got ya. still wish it could happen. I hope that if they continue the game farther than s3 breckon is involved. and hopefully they don't give the lead to someone else in S3

All of those guys, plus Michael Stemmle were a big part of what made Telltale Games what it is today, and it's sad to see them all go.

They were all among my favorite designers at Telltale (plus Mark Darin, who is still at Telltale, as far as I know). I sincerely wish them the best of luck in the future, and hope they all get a chance to make new games. I'll definitely be buying them once they do.
