Were downvotes that bad?
Really, yet another change that seems completely pointless.
I never understood how a downvote bothered people, in my opinion having likes and dislikes simplified people posting +1 or -1. It also helped show opinions of a comment. I've been downvoted myself plenty and while it is sometimes random it shows that my opinion at the time was unpopular. If the dislike is gone why not the like too? I mean now it just seems like the 21st century everything anyone every does should be praised and not criticised.
If people were that bothered couldnt it have been added into thread settings whether likes,dislikes or nothing were perimiteed.
Also but if it was that easy to change couldnt we have polls,emotions and easier quoting and image/video posting? Which I (and I'm sure others agree) would likely be more important changes than removing a little button which really shouldnt bother anyone in the first place.

I agree! I think having the option to allow upvotes and/or downvotes is a great idea! Having polls and an easier way to post images/video would be good aswell.
Sticks and stones may break my bones but downvotes will cause permanent psychological damage.

I'm conflicted about it because on one hand I'm glad they're gone because it was often misused, but on the other hand I miss it because they were useful when someone said something offensive or dumb.

This is what I hate, everyone who downvotes is a troll, no there not there just disagreeing,because I dont praise everything. I downvote and upvote occasionaly . Downvote trolls are people who downvote everything or anything one person says.
Also I fail to see how anyone could find that fun and for the few people who do surely they can only find it funny if people have extreme reactions to it. For example the people who post rage filled comments at being downvoted. If no one reacted to a downvote and simply viewed it for an opinion then there would not be trolls in the first place. By reacting in such a way your "feeding the troll" its shown if you dig up a few threads people getting the most downvotes are the people who react to them

Now people will have to share their negative opinion on a subject/opinion with words and comments, thus sparking a discussion like a COMMUNITY. that sure is a shame huh?
To me, downvotes were a lazy man's feature to ensure discussions didn't get very far.
if you looked at the "remove the downvote" thread, you could see that every single comment in the thread was downvoted, i even for fun wrote "the walking dead is a fantastic game" in the thread, and that got 3 downvotes, if that doesnt prove that people were misusing it, then i dont know what will, it had good features, like telling Cluke fans to fuck off, but it did more bad than good
Yes some people misuse it, but at the end of the day its WHY it should bother people in the first place.
Anyway my point was more if they remove the dislike, why not remove the like as well, or use the time to allow polls to be made or emotions or make it easier to simply quote other people or make it easier to post images or make it easier to post videos?
Whenever I got downvotes, I just ignored them. They never bothered me, the only reason I'm happy that they're gone is because all the sensitive users who downvoted my comments previously because of my opinions will now have to speak up rather than just hiding and downvoting. I would much rather prefer is somebody explained to me why they disagree with me rather than just be downvoted and then I'm left hanging.

Exactly! If you disagree with them then come out of the closet and speak out why I say. Not throw a dislike at them and then hide&giggle/snicker. If you feel you shouldn't have to explain why then just ignore it entirely and move about your business. It's like the old saying "if you can't say anything nice then don't say anything at all" Which is kind of what having the dislike button eradicated is like. Disagreement generates debate. Agreement doesn't generate much but a high five figuratively speaking I suppose. But those folks that want the dislike back, just want to cowardly dislike without spurring some sort of argument. (And were probably also against having the anonymity removed with their dislikes.) Now people with unpopular opinions can openly speak out and have meaningful debates with those who do not agree with their opinion. Instead of just frustratingly view dislikes without any substance or explanation which is almost in a sense just plain rude.
I didn't care shit about downvotes.. if i got a downvote i was like zzzzzzz. But now there is going to be a negative word fight and people are going to get hurt. The downvote trolls are coming with words now. Be ready
Well I, and some of other people, used the downvote button just to avoid starting a big argument because some people get very, very angry if somebody doesn't agree with their opinion. Not to be lazy.
I never hard a problem with down votes, I think getting down voted made some people feel bad, but at least getting a vote shows that those people noticed your comment and took time out of their life to focus on yours. I just ignored down votes, but then again I never really used the dislike button...

Dislikes represent negativity or disagreement. Users get downvotes/ dislikes for voicing their opinions and it really does affect people.

The downvotes were annoying especially when you posted a fair and reasonable comment. I'm glad they have been removed.
I wouldn't have cared if they remained, but I'm glad they're gone only because now people can't use that tired "Here come the downvotes/bring on the downvotes/bracing for downvotes/any variation of the previous three catchphrases" line whenever they think they're being edgy. Much like Kenny gifs, it very quickly got old. But, like I said, I could have lived with it just fine. Just one of those pet peeve thingies.
