W&G demo on Linux

Good news - well, sort of. I've managed to get the demo of Wallace and Gromit's Grand Adventures running on Linux in Wine. Unfortunately the wrapper seems to be a little wonky - it doesn't seem to like to run with IE6. Running it with the Gecko plugin seems to work, at least enough to provide a "Click here to play the game" link, which launches the game itself. Running in Windows XP compat mode is recommended, so that audio will work correctly with F-Mod. The game itself runs smoothly, at least after my initial test of it.

Hopefully the wrapper in the final release versions will work better, but otherwise things look good. Looks like another buy.

    When I try to run the demo under wine I get a black screen after the initial "yahoo" splash.... any ideas?

    I guess I don't know what you mean by the "yahoo" splash, is this after you click the link in the launcher screen? Do you get any interesting messages in the terminal window where you start the game? Have you successfully played any of Telltale's prior titles? What does 'glxinfo' tell you about your hardware GL support?

    By "yahoo" splash, he is referring to a splash screen at the very start of the demo. Depending on where you got the demo from, you may or may not see a splash screen at the start of of the game (boot up time doesn't take any longer either way).

    Hm, okay, I downloaded direct from you guys, so that must be why that sounds unfamiliar to me.

    Hi, same problem here: black screen after the splash page, after clicking "Click here to play the game".

    I'm using wine 1.1.17 and, following a suggestion elsewhere in the forum, a d3dx9_36.dll from a windows xp installation.

    Starting the game from the terminal, I obtain some 3.6Mb of stderr, of which the first rows are:

    Unfortunately it looks like the graphics card you have doesn't support pixel and vertex shader programs. The Telltale graphics engine makes significant use of those features, so without them it won't actually work.

    How old is your graphics card, anyway? The R300 is, according to what I can find, from probably 5-6 years back. You'll need something fairly modern to work with their games; nVidia is the best bet, but something recent from ATI should work too.

    The black screen issue could be a video mode error. Wine is still a bit rough around the edges when it comes to handling full-screen smoothly.

    Try running the game in a window. To force Desktop Mode (which can be set on a per-application basis in winecfg), change: 
    wine WallaceGromitDemo.exe
    to 
    wine explorer /desktop=Wine,800x600 WallaceGromitDemo.exe
