Episode 5: Luke and the Ending

(Not sure what to name this :P)

Ah Luke, your death hit most of us fans hard. You were a great character. You had faults, advantages, you weren't afraid to admit and try to fix them, and tried your best to keep everyone around you living.

Which is why a few things that happened don't make any sort of sense.

Before I get to talking about his untimely demise, I'll say something that's been bothering me for a bit now, and that's when he decided to sleep with Jane.

That split up a bunch of fans, with many of them taking it to mean that Luke doesn't really care about the group, and is really an irresponsible prick who only really cares himself and his feelings. I don't and didn't feel that way. I feel that was just another example of episode 4's less than great writing. Luke has consistently shown to care deeply for the safety of the group, and Jane too has shown to care mainly for herself, doing whatever it takes to keep herself safe. So, with those as their traits, it makes no sense that they would have (most likely) unprotected sex when they were supposed to be looking out for walkers, Luke because he cares far too much about the group to let that happen and Jane because she wouldn't risk the chance of getting pregnant. It was most likely only there to further add drama between him and the group (mainly him since it appears nobody gave a shit about Jane's part in it), and because of it, to me it feels forced and I really couldn't take it to heart very much.

But that wasn't what I wanted to talk about. You could tell from the beginning that I wish to discuss his death :P

And what a horrible death it was. Death by drowning in the water of a frozen over lake? Even if you don't think about it very hard, it's just terrible.

Too bad it shouldn't have happened in the first place huh?

Luke was originally supposed to live (http://buricko.tumblr.com/post/95871272944/so-theres-an-audio-file-of-luke-being-pulled) and was, most likely, going to be the one you were going to have the option to choose over or under Kenny at the end of the episode. Now, you see, this was a brilliant idea. You, as Clementine, had to choose between a man you have known for a long time, have shared so many memories with, and you know is a good person at heart, but is gradually getting more and more psychotic, and a man you've known not as long, but have progressively gotten to know and like over the entirety of the season, and, as far as you knew, was much more capable of taking care of you, and could help you help others.

Who do you choose? The one you've known and grown attached to, but bad for you, or the one you comparatively barely know, but can help you? It would have been a much more powerful decision to make as either way, you lose someone who you've grown to love like family.

But NOPE. Since someone leaked that out Luke got the death sentence and instead we got the travesty that is the Kenny vs. Jane debacle.

Making Jane be the one to choose between Kenny makes no sense, as you barely get to know her, and what she does give away makes her a fucking asshole ("Oh, I'll leave my sister to get eaten by walkers instead of just killing her to spare her the horror that is getting eaten alive."). She has repeatedly told you to leave the group you've obviously bonded with because "they'll drag her down" (because she totally knows them enough to be a good judge of that, right? The whole week she knew them? Perfect amount of time), including a fucking baby. She robs and threatens a lanky, disabled guy who can barely speak English and tells her that he has friends in the forest, even if you tell her not to, because fuck it, why not? She provokes a mentally unstable man into a psychotic break by leaving a baby alone in a truck in the middle of a blizzard and purposefully fails to tell him that it's safe because she wanted to prove "how dangerous he was".

All of these ridiculously stupid, thoughtless, and heartless decisions prove that she is just as dangerous as Kenny, if not more so. It surprises me that anyone would choose either of them, because of the absolutely shit things they have done. And that's just it. No matter what choice you choose, you are in the worst possible hands. Choose Kenny, you have a friend, but you also have an insane man who barely listens to reason. Choose Jane, and you're left with a manipulative psychopath who kills anyone that isn't you or her. Choose neither, and you're left to wander aimlessly around with a baby you don't know how to take care of. You're best bet is to choose to leave Kenny and go in Wellington. You're left the guilt of leaving Kenny, sure, but you have a most likely safe place to be in, and hell, even Kenny is okay with it.

But what would have been even better is to have a choice that insures safety and happiness, that shows that you would pick to live instead of just survive. Luck would have been the perfect character to choose for that, since he tries to keep Clem happy and living, unlike Jane and Kenny, who only care for one.

Luke.
