Deathspank - No longer episodic?

edited April 2009 in General Chat
Well, I'm surprised that nobody made a post yet.

As said on Grumpy Gamers (Ron Gilbert) blog, the game DeathSpank will be a single game, not episodic.

What do you think of this?

Yes, I'm talking to you. With the funny hair.

I have no idea what this is about. Is it an adventure game? I've been rather off lately with too many games to play, plus, cod5 as taken much of my game time.

Ron Gilbert made Maniac Mansion, Monkey Island, then stopped for a while. Now he's back with DeathSpank. There is only a minute long trailer of some guy whacking people with a stick, and people are excited because, well, It's Ron Gilbert!!!

There are a few other trailers too.

Anyway, that's weird. The entire structure of the game is being changed midway through? Will it feel like a lot of episodic games stitched together?

It makes me wary of the game, really.

    *snip*
As some of the more astute web surfers and GDC going elite have noted, it was unofficially announced at GDC that DeathSpank is no longer episodic.

    Yes, it's true.

"So", you're probably saying, "Does this mean when I buy DeathSpank I'll just get all the episodes at once"?

"No", I would reply. Then I would backtrack a little and hedge my bets and say "Maybe" or "Kind of, but not really".

DeathSpank isn't a very patient guy. He would never be able to play though one episode after another. He'd just run in and play them all at once. He's that kind of guy. He also gets impatient if someone doesn't die fast enough.

So what we did was take all the story, puzzles and fight'n and weave them into one larger game. The overarching story is the same, but the world is larger, more open, more compelling and completely load-less. You can walk from one end of the vast world to the other and never see a load screen or camera cut.

We do these things because we care.
    *snap*

Sounds good to me, i trust him and hope that all turns out well in the end. You never know but from the games he did and the things he said over the years it seems that he still knows what's important for an good adventure. DeathSpank sounds interesting and i also prefer non episodic games (i quite enjoyed playing AVS in this respect). Hopefully he doesn't get infected by the virus which seemed to hit TTG and prevents them from thinking up unique games anymore.
