Somebody in the office pointed that site out recently. For me, the fun bit was the "multiplayer" aspect of watching all of the other people running around and seeing what commands they were giving the game. I found that charming.
The nostalgia factor mostly served to remind me how annoying this was:
    "open door"
-You are not standing close enough to the door.

I can't handle any adventure games that pre-date Monkey Island style controls. That's as primitive as I get. Which is a shame because I lose interest in all of the "Quest" series as I don't want to start in the middle.

Of course, had I started off playing it I'm sure my opinion would be different.

Sarien.Net is a continuation of the old Good Old Adventures Sierra AGI Chat Room that was online years ago but died. This seems like an evolution of that concept, but it still lacks some of the features that Good Old Adventures had. Like the ability to choose a personal "skin" for your character from any AGI game (along with a large archive of custom ones too like Neo from The Matrix which was neato!). GOA seemed like it recreated each scene and programmed the rooms from scratch, though. While Sarien.Net seems to actually use the original game data files for each game.

Which of these is the first that switches to a point and click interface with graphics comparable at least to say Monkey Island or Fate of Atlantis?

I just realized I watched my mom play KQ7 as a kid and I loved that game.

King's Quest IV was the first Sierra game to use a higher res graphic engine and utilize mouse control (albeit without intelligent pathfinding, so the character would walk into a wall or tree or some other object if it was directly between the point A-point B walking path) and sound card support. King's Quest V was the first Sierra game to switch to an entirely P&C-driven interface and 256-colour VGA graphics. I think it was also the first computer game released on CD. I think.

I remember playing a remake of King Quest I with the graphics of the 5th game some years ago...If that helps to bring you any closer to the series.

I kind of find it weird to see someone have issue playing games from before Monkey Island, really. Especially since some of my favorite adventures have NO graphics.

Also included is a remake of Quest for Glory II and an enhancement of King's Quest II. (legal and officially licensed) KQ1 and KQ2 remakes were recently updated with even more enhanced hand-painted graphics as opposed to the Sierra background collaged inferior ones from the earlier versions.

These guys remade King's Quest III and are working on Space Quest II with yours truly as one of the composers.

All of them made in AGS and work fine in XP and Vista.

Quest for Glory 2 VGA turned into one of my favorite RPG's. I spent around two months trying to beat it on Fighter mode.

The parser kills me in combination with "hard to see your needed quest item" graphics plus little direction. (I'm not a fan of Myst.) I don't enjoy not having ANY idea what I ought to be doing.

Thanks for answering this question by the way - I totally missed this the first time.

Thanks for the compliments on sarien.net. The multiplayer aspect has made it stand out a bit, but it is also very experimental and odd, as the original gameplay did not have mp, and so it does not make sense. Still, I find it to be ever so entertaining to play a game singleplayer and from time to time see someone else pop up.

Even though I haven't updated the site recently (personal life, 3 kids, work, yadayada), I do plan to continue adding new games, features, and hopefully get down to the sci engine and scumm engine using the available freesci and scummvm sources to see if porting that would make sense.

On the other hand, I would really love to see what possibilities ly within the combination of episodic content and web and/or multiplayer. A combination of telltale and sarien, even for promotion of the adventure game genre or such, I would really like to investigate what would be possible there. If you have any wild fantasies (preferrably on topic ;-)), let me know.
