Is Clem too young to be the protag?

Do you think Clementine is too young to be the main character in The Walking Dead Game? Why or why not?

I have strongly held opinions on the matter and I'm sure I'll chime in soon, but I'd like to see where this goes without my input.

  • I think she is..at least let the other characters that are adults actually do things and not be idiots....then I'd be fine with it.

In a bit over 3 months, Clementine had to shoot her guardian. That shows she's capable of dealing with situations on her own from such a young age. 2 years later, I'd think she's be extremely more matured with her high intelligence in the newly changed world to be capable of being a protagonist of an entire season. But I still kinda find it sorta laughable that secondary characters listen to her as if she was Lee. I'll just assume they wouldn't know what to do yet to handle a situation with your surroundings. But it still stands that Lee and Christa's guidance over her has been more than enough for her to take on her own lead as the main character.

  • Clementine is more mature and useful than any of the adults.

    So...

It worked great for Season 2. Not sure if I'd want to keep playing as a weak little girl throughout every other season of TWD, though. It kind of limits the possibilities that they would have for major plotpoints.

  • I hope Season 3 makes her grow up into the teenager stage.

  • I'd be fine if Clem was just a deuteragonist .

  • I don't think the idea behind her age is the problem (as Clementine has shown that she's intelligent and resourceful despite her inexperience), but there are some issues in finding the right balance between making her a competent member of the group and acknowledging that she's still a child.

There are times where it works, like the awkward first meeting with Carver, but there are also scenarios that make the other characters painfully ineffectual for the sake of making Clementine seem more useful.

  • because the writers don't know how to write capable adults except luke and pete and maybe carver.

  • Be glad that she is in the game at all, most games don't include children because it's too violent than seeing an adult dying.

I remember being her age and nobody listening to me!

For me, the important thing about Clementine is that because she was only eight when the whole thing started, she's more a part of that world than an adult would be. She's spent a greater percentage of her life among those particular threats, so she knows that when something needs to get done, it's get it done or die.

When people were saying "but Clementine couldn't turn off a wind turbine," I don't think they took that into account. If my life depended on it, I would certainly do my best to figure it out before the walkers showed up!

Oops, forgot to answer the question: no. She isn't too young.

  • A game called "Among The Sleep" had a 2 year old child as a protagonist. Do you still think that Clementine is too young?

I must admit that I found playing as Clem much more interesting than Lee. Not sure what it exactly is, but the only reservation I have about her age is that I find I reconsider my opinion more based on that than I would have, had she been an adult.

  • Also most children in video games are soo annoying that all we want is for them to disappear from the game somehow.

Be glad that she is in the game at all, most games don't include children because it's too violent than seeing an adult dying.

  • The point is she isn't weak. I like it more than most games in which we can just hammer through zombies, Clem has to be more tactical

  • I think S3 should have an older Clem/new Protaganist. The whole thing of "ur lil girl, but u thik ur big girl" is going to wear off soon. And the whole action hero Clem is going to fall deeper and deeper into unrealism

  • Nope, it's not unrealistic that she can do the things she does. Growing up in times like that hardens you and makes you more experienced than adults who have been shaped by a less insane world. She isn't anything like an action hero though

    1. Stitches her arm with with no pain reducing drugs.
    2. Bit on the arm manages to overpower a walker and also manages to propel the dog a good length
    3. Shot in the arm, with a rifle. Still manages to walk
    4. Does ariel attacks.
    5. Can overpower a grown man

If that doesn't sound like something from a Arnie flick then what does.
And it's bullshit too say that it's because she lives in the ZA. If it was strength, she'd have muscles. The ZA doesn't cause Evolution.

  • It doesn't, it sounds like what people do in lots of zombie fiction. Christa taught her how to stitch wounds, I'm pretty sure 2 years into a zombie apocalypse people would know that, the dog thing is debatable but depending on her adrenaline and the dog's weakness she could've. Gunshots sure, we know Telltale act like a gunshot is just a flesh wound in S2, in S1 they were big impact things, in S2 people get shot and heal asap, it isn't only her. Anyone can jump on someone from above, that is hardly a super power. She never overpowered a grown man

    that is totally absurd.

i do not see any problems with her age.

if anything it just makes the character more interesting.

we need more young, female or ethnic protagonists.

  • Winston by the way. She manges to push him off into the Walker and survive for that long. And I'm not talking about how she stitches the wound. I'm talking about how she did it with only getting a few groans of pain then just shrugging it off.

  • It's the apocalypse. There ain't such thing as "too young".

  • Well, he could've been starving and not expecting a little girl to put up much of a fight, underestimating is very dangerous. It didn't seem like he wanted to kill her so it'd be less awks for her to fight back. Her screams were pretty genuine sounding imo, she could've just grit her teeth for a bit and kept it to herself about the pain of the cleaning and stitching part

  • Too young and naive. Cant take some of her dialogues seriously and her decisions annoy me sometimes. For example, you can agree that Kenny is out of control and he seems like Carver, but the next moment she isnt ready to leave him behind. Just stupid and illogical behaviour.

  • That's more about bad writing though.

No matter how many times you have choices to voice your opposition towards Kenny there will always be forced moments where Clementine is shown to care for him.
There is never any times where Clementine will always oppose Kenny it can only happen in picked dialogue.

  • I personally think Clementine was fine for Season 2 to be honest. Although she might be a little bit young, she's very tactical and can be violent a lot of times... which sometimes makes me wonder if she really is only.. what was she? 10? Wasn't she 9 and then she had her birthday? Right? Or is she 12 already? Oh god, too many numbers. Anyway, I'd love to play as Clementine again next season. Maybe when she grew up a bit though. Not exactly sure how everything works in the comics.

  • She shows care for him because clementine and kenny are the only people left who know lee , I think that's why clementine even if clementine doesn't like him

  • I like the idea of a child protag I just think they could've done it better, they made her opinions and thoughts too irrelevant. I get it's realistic but it just made situations less involving which sucked, I hope S3 Clem has a bit more respect.

Its not what she does, we know she's a qualified survivor, thats not my issue with her being protagonist at this age, its the situations she is writen into "BECAUSE" she is the protagonist that bothers me...

Sewing her arm was not an issue for me, she was alone in the shed and someone with clems background and intelligence I can except doing that... pain wise? That open to debate but its not a game killer..

What is tho is clem being writen into the story that she is PICKED over a group of adults that have survived just as long as her to assult a bridge then asked to loot unchecked buildings while adults sit about, just because she is the protagonist.... non of this would of happened if she was NOT the protagonist. And thats why I think it was a mistake and to early to cast her as protagonist, clem doing stuff JUST BECAUSE.... it doesnt make sence and feels forced and then you know your playing a GAME!.... zero emersion in the story

  • It kind of made sense though. Carlos has Sarah to look after, Rebecca and Alvin with the baby, Nick is unstable because of Pete. Luke and Clem were the only people without reasons to hold them back for safety really

  • In the next game they will probably have the baby telling people what to do.

    Pls delete, wrong post..

  • Thats probably the best defence ive heard so far so respect for that, still dont agree tho lol...

Ok lets say your carlos, you have sarah to protect, your group finds a little girl in the woods with her arm in bits..... fast forward the shed scenes...

Would you allow pete/luke and nick to take this little girl into the woods on a search and rescue mission less than 24 hours after? Or would you think its safer for a little girl to stay at the cabin?

Would you be ok with luke taking this little girl over the bridge on an assult mission? ?.... would you ask questions as to why this little girl we just met is asked to scout the bridge with the binoculars, would you wonder why this little girl is tasked with shutting down a wind turbine?

And you can ask those same questions from ANYONES POV.... pete/nick/becca/luke/alvin.... the story was forced to operate around clem, and when your force a protagonist...... everything that follows doesn't work or doesnt make sence..

Not really. Despite my whims as Clem being the protagonist, if they keep her in s3 I would still want her to be a kid. Being a teenager myself, I hate it when people are like "you can't do that, you're just a kid," so its nice playing as a kid who is better than all the adults.
