W+G ep2 (steam) won't launch - different error to other thread

edited May 2009 in Game Support
I'm also having issues with W+G ep2 from Steam, but they look different to the other thread guy's problem.

When I run the game (from the steam Games menu or from a steam-created desktop shortcut), I get this error and then nothing else:

Steam Error
Application load error 9:0000065450
OK

This happens before any graphics mode-switch or apparent other activity. I'm logged in online on Steam and my other Steam games are working.

I had similar issues with W+G ep1 on Steam too but that eventually started working after some fiddling (and continues to work now - I can run ep1, get to the main menu, exit, and then try+fail ep2 immediately afterwards).

I tried the prefs.prop file linked from the other thread - the relevant folder under My Documents didn't exist, and creating it and putting the file in didn't help. I've tried deleting and redownloading the game content, doesn't seem to help or alter the error. I've tried it with AVG antivirus disabled, without various other stuff running, none of it seems to help.

I'm kicking myself for buying through Steam now, as I've gotten all my previous TTG goodness directly from the source.

That sounds like a problem on Steam's end before it even boots up the game. Sadly I don't know enough about their error codes to be able to tell you what's happening. You might want to try contacting their support: https://support.steampowered.com/

OK - I'd already opened a Steam support ticket, so I've updated it accordingly.

I'm suffering this problem too, with a Radeon 200M video adaptor on vista. The directx update was initially cancelled, which may or may not be part of the problem.

I had no issues with Ep1, but if i restart steam I can get Ep2 to run once, but unfortunately only text renders, no images or 3d graphics. Trying to launch again results in the error code mentioned above. The main menu is vageuly usable, but its just a black screen in-game. Have tried re-downloading, etc to no avail.

I've given in and swapped to playing this particular episode on my laptop, where it runs just fine.

Well, you can try updating your DirectX the old fashioned way. May fix the problem: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=2DA43D38-DB71-4C1B-BC6A-9B6652CD92A3&displaylang=en

No luck on the manual DX update - but that said, it did seem to manage to do that automatically when I first tried running it.

Doesn't really matter, I've completed it on my laptop. Great game - I'll just have to write this one off as "my pc being crazy"!
