The Walking Carlos
Let's consider if Kenny never "got real lucky" and came back from the dead. Who would take his role as the main aggressor within the group? I think it would have been Carlos.
Carlos apparently had a history of a quick temper, alluded to in "A House Divided" when Luke says "And Carlos won't do anything not nice...will he?" before they go in the lodge
When Carver takes everyone hostage, Carlos does not go quietly against him. He flat out spits in Carver's face and is shown to not be a complacent person.
Of course, I didn't have much to go on around Carlos's character, so this is just pure speculation since after "A House Divided" Carlos disappears and becomes a meek dude with no backbone seen when Carver forces him to slap Sarah in "In Harm's Way"
Carlos easily could have taken Kenny's role in "Amid the Ruins." It makes sense for him to be there because he could help Rebecca give birth. Rebecca will still die of childbirth. Carlos will take over as the baby's caretaker.
Let's say that Carlos made it to "No Going Back." Luke didn't take the ice bucket challenge and Sarah is still alive, and Jane takes the chill pill instead. The campfire would have been a great opportunity to learn about the Cabin Group's backstory. Instead of Kenny vs Jane, it becomes a situation of Carlos vs Nick in the finale as both have been seen as hot-headed and somewhat irritable. Luke is badly injured and almost unconscious and cannot stop Carlos or Nick from raging at each other. Sarah is watching the two of them, crying for them to stop. Neither Carlos or Nick will listen to reason. Decision time. What do you do? Do you shoot Carlos in front of Sarah? Do you shoot Nick in front of Luke? Do you threaten to shoot yourself? Which friend is more important to you? Nick, the easily depressed screw-up who always wants to help his friends or Carlos the stern father figure who has a slightly mentally disabled daughter.
Shooting Carlos makes Sarah scream in shock and terror. She will grab a gun that has fallen, forgotten. Depending on whether or not you were friends with her, she will react differently to you. If you were friends, she will look at you in terror while sobbing that her daddy was dead while holding the gun. If you weren't friends, she will grab a gun and point it at your head depending on how you taught her to shoot or not. Obviously in a shattered mental state, she stands far from Nick, who's on the ground exhausted, Luke, who's almost passed out and Clem, who is too far to help. If you didn't teach her to shoot, she will prepare to shoot herself. (Bam), unless you talk her out of it. If you taught her how to shoot, she will be aiming the gun at you, remembering what you told her to do, unless you talk her out of it.
Shooting Nick makes Luke incredibly sad, but he understands Clem's reasons for killing him as Nick wanted to end it already. From here you can choose to bring Carlos and Sarah with you to wherever you're going, leave the baby with Carlos, or take Sarah from her father as she no longer trusts him because of his violent outbursts. If you bring Carlos and Sarah with you, Luke will object as Carlos intended to kill Nick in cold blood but will eventually agree since they were all that's left. If you choose to leave the baby, Luke will agree, saying that Carlos is the best caretaker possible for the baby. If you choose to take Sarah only with you, Carlos will agree reluctantly, claiming that she will be safer with Luke and Clem. If you choose to take only Carlos, Luke and Carlos will stare at you like you're an idiot and both will profusely refuse. (?) Sarah will remember that
Doing nothing will make Carlos get the upper hand on Nick, thus killing him as Nick realizes what he's doing by fighting a friend, pleading with Carlos to stop then just telling him to get it over with. After this, you have the option to shoot Carlos or not, after witnessing him murder Nick in cold blood. Whether you shoot him or not affects Luke's thinking of you and Sarah's as well. If you shot Carlos, he dies. If you didn't shoot Carlos, Sarah will hug him while sobbing. Carlos will be exhausted but seemingly distrustful of himself, telling you to take Sarah. You can refuse or agree or take both of them. Depending on your relationship with Sarah, she will reluctantly agree with Carlos's decision or refuse.
(?) Luke and Sarah will remember that
Threatening to kill yourself will make everyone stare at you, as if not believing you. Luke will not believe you. Sarah will be worried. Nick and Carlos will stare at you like you're insane, then continue fighting. It goes back to the decision between shooting Nick or Carlos or doing nothing since shooting yourself will make no sense at all to the story.
I don't know, I feel like it would have been great if at least two of the Cabin Group could have made it to the end. I mean we knew Rebecca would die for the baby, Alvin for Rebecca and Pete for Nick. They would have been developed well in the campfire scene after a complete lack of it in "In Harm's Way." Leading to the ultimate decision of who you trust more to travel with in the future.
Looking back at this post, I realize that "In Harm's Way" messed up the flow of the game for me. Almost complete elimination of hubs which lead to no character development which led to nothing learnt about Mike and Jane. Mike was a grouch who wanted sleep and Jane was just silent from the first encounter which makes her development in "Amid the Ruins" seem really out of place. Anyway, if Carlos made it to the end with Sarah, Nick and Luke, what would you do? Who would you take at the end? Who would you save? And did your past decisions matter?
