Full Throttle Help

edited April 2012 in General Chat
I was at blockbuster yesterday and I saw that they were selling old games in a 3 pack for $9.99 (marked down from 14.99)
Since I have been out on the look for old Lucas Arts games, I thought I'd check, and guess what....to my surprise they had one with full throttle! So I got it... and brought it home, installed it on my comp, etc. It ran fine except for sound. It was very difficult to get the sound to work, and when I eventually got some sound from messing with it, it was all choppy, voice and music.
So I searched online about this problem (I'm running xp, btw) and ended up downloading VDMSound. I got it to work, and it gave me sound, but now my only problem is that the voice is going faster then normal. Is this something I can slow down by pushing some key command, or is it just software/hardware problems. VDMSound doesent say anything about fixing this in the readme.
Does anyone else play full throttle on xp? and what do you do to make it run decently?
I tried ScummVM but I'm totally lost on how to use it. It doesent find my game at all.
DosBox is annoying also.

I find myself asking what Blockbuster was doing with PC games for sale... Did they used to rent them?

Anyway, ScummVM should work. If you're having trouble configuring it to work with your games, there is a front end that can be downloaded called ScummVM Quick And Easy. It's supposed to make it more user friendly. I haven't used it myself, though, since I haven't had trouble with ScummVM by itself. I think you have to have both programs on your computer for it to work.

Anyway, you can get it here:

They were brand new jewel cases. all marked down on clearance. They also had a 3 pack with monkey island 4.

The pack I got came with Outlaws (another lucas arts game) and Shogun: Total War (which was a game I used to really wanna get back when it was brand new)

The site has Quick and Easy VMD Sound too... I'll try that first! thanks for the link.

    SPOON!

They weren't bad for the time of release, but the art direction is great.

ScummVM is pretty easy - according to the scummvm website Full Throttle is 85% compatible with ScummVM so there is a chance you will still get csome minor bugs.

The key to finding the game using Scummvm is to make sure you are looking in the correct directory. Right click on your Full Throttle shortcut and check the properties to see the exact path the game file is installed in (something like: program files/lucasarts/full throttle/ft.exe) Make sure you click the "choose" button in ScummVM when you are in the directory that has the ft.exe file.

Personal Note: Dosbox is not annoying. It is simply archaic - for those of us who actually used Dos back in the 80s, it is actually a really nice trip down memory lane when computers never crashed.

Agreed about DosBox. It's not particularly user-friendly, but it's also a godsend to us (slightly) older geeks.

I'd also suggest using ScummVM. It's actually pretty simple, just make sure it's looking in the right place. IIRC, Full Throttle doesn't install to the hard drive so you may have to direct ScummVM to look onto the actual CD. If that works, then you should probably copy the files from the CD to the hard drive and get ScummVM to read from there, it'll be quicker.

wow, necroing 7 year old threads?

Oh wow, it was as well. How did I not notice that? Bloody noobs.

Oh well, as a note, I think ScummVM has improved its Full Throttle support over the last 7 years, so it should be better now.

Ah I remember Blockbuster. You know what really killed them? Pay for and expiring memberships. I know that's why I stopped going originally. Used to just sign up, get a card, and it was good for life. Quit blaming technology, greed was your downfall. Going digital wouldn't have been that hard and more affordable. They just sucked.

Eh, I dunno. Their pre-owned games sections have got some good deals (*cough*WhiteKnightChronicles2*cough*). But yeah, almost everything else is ludicrously expensive, especially when you realise internet rentals are far, far cheaper.

I love the new Blockbuster. Online games and movies (DVDs + Blu-Rays) delivered for the same price. I had GameFly and Netflix. Then Netflix separated their services. I like the online viewing (in fact I use it more than DVD deliveries), but I liked the DVDs too (for stuff not on instant view). But, then I found out Blockbuster did both for less than Gamefly's price, so now I do Netflix Instant and Blockbuster. :)

Oh they did go online there. Good for them. They didn't here and went bankrupt. They don't exist anymore in Canada.

It certainly did take them forever to go the online route. Almost all of their stores are closed here in the US too.

It took them until they had to file Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the US in 2010 to get their act together. But, at least now they seem to be on the right track. :)

They're still hanging on in the UK, but I hardly ever see anyone else in there. I usually go in to browse the pre-used stuff, since it's quite cheap, but yeah, online stuff really is far better, if not quite as quick.
