Do Game of Thrones achievements require you to have the Steam version?

Hi, I am currently contemplating buying Telltale's 'Game of Thrones'. There seems to be 2 versions for sale, a non-Steam version sold through 3rd party websites and possibly Telltale's digital store, and a Steam version from Steam. Apparently a key from a 3rd party website is not compatible with Steam, so I need to get this right the first time.

Is the Steam version of the game required for achievements?

I prefer not to use Steam unless it is the only way to gain achievements. I've bought games through Steam in the past and found out I didn't need it for the achievements (i.e. the game 'Influent' had Steam Achievements, but actually had its own in-game achievement system which means Steam wasn't needed for them. The non-Steam version had this in-game achievement system intact.)
