Avant-Garde Music

edited December 2014 in General Chat

Usually whenever I create a tropic it dies immediately, but I'll give it another shot.

Who likes really avant-garde rock? Laibach (who inspired Rammstein), Idiot Flesh, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, Nuclear Rabbit, Mr. Bungle, etc.

Feel free to share videos; I got this inspiration for this from the post on weird game trailers, but it doesn't have to be dark like the first one, which is a poem by T.S. Eliot put to music; I just really go for the dark meat. (wait a minute...) Btw, the second one is funny, because it's actually the lyrics from Queen's "One Vision."

I'm not a fan of modern avant garde music generally, but I love what WAS avant garde i naround the 90s or so.

For instance the feminist punk rock movement that was Riot Grrrl is one of my favourite genres ever and redefined the place of women in music. It basically said that women are able to play guitar as well as men, so there's no real reason why there should be fewer of them. To counter this underrepresentation, they created bands where the majority of members were female, and it was pretty rad.

It's not traditionally considered 'avant garde', but it was a new idea and new movement for rock music so it basically is.

    Skip to 1:28 for incredible guitar solo (performed...by a female :O :O :O)

There's also this, with less attack but awesome lyrics. Riot Grrrl is just so awesome.

"You spin round on your carousel

    Going nowhere and looking swell!

Sometimes I catch you looking my way

You always get scared and run away.

    Cause co-ed playground means confrontation

With boyish fears of girl intimidation

You're too cozy in your all-boy clubhouse

To even consider having kool-aid at my house"

Talking about sexism in schools between boys and girls and how ridiculous and frustrating it is. Hence 'girl germs'.
