What Type Of Religion Do You Practice?

edited January 2015 in General Chat

Hi there, I'm here to ask which religion (or phylosophy) do you practice.

Are there any Buddhists? Do you believe in a religion that has a book (e.g. the Quran, the Bible, etc.)? I'm curious!

Now, let's not insult. You must tolerate other beliefs/religions as much as you want others to tolerate your beliefs/religions. We just want to have fun because, you know: we're all people in the end.

  • I'm an agnostic atheist. Was, however, raised as an Orthodox Christian (Russian Orthodox Church).

    I believe in The Force.

Jokes apart, I'm an agnostic atheist but I am open to the possibility of something after death (not paradise, purgatory or hell though) and other things in general; we haven't discovered everything yet and I am convinced that unexplainable events now, will one day be explained. However I do not beleive in a greater entity. I also am grateful to my parents for letting me beleive in what I wanted since my childhood.

But, if I had to choose a religion I'd probably be a buddhist, as I see buddhism more like a philosophy of life.

Why Buddhism in particular? I did East Asia studies in college so I've invariably had to learn a lot about Buddhism.

Personally, I was raised Episcopalian, but I'm fervently agnostic (I can get into why I say agnostic rather than atheist if you'd like. It's not a cop-out to be nice to religious people - I'm actually pretty much an anti-theist).

I'll also say, as far as tolerance, I don't believe in religious tolerance any more than I believe in political tolerance - they are ideas, some can be foiled with logic, some require ridicule. You shouldn't insult the person, and you certainly can't ban it by law, but you can argue and mock, and I'm willing to have my ideas to be derided and made fun of.

  • Agnostic (Atheist if people ask for more in depth answer). I was raised a Christian but I just don't care about religion anymore, I don't know if there is a God or not and frankly I don't give a shit.

  • Agnostic Atheist, though Apatheist if you want to be specific. Pretty much the same as GoldenPaladin.

  • Why Buddhism in particular?

I just want to see if there is someone that practices an Eastern Asian religion. I've got so many deubts in my head about those types of religions since they're not common were I live.

    I don't think you're the only one

Yeah, I agree. But I made this thread to share openly one's religion instead of discussing wich one is better. I want to know, not to argue. If you want to discuss which religion is better or worse, feel free to create a thread.

    Well... that was quite speachless.

Our minds are alike mate, even in your other threads (which are good reads by the way) I mostly share your opinion. This deserves a high five!

  • The Episcopal Church is the American branch of the Anglican Communion, it's basically the American Church of England. After the Revolutionary War, the Anglcan church in the colonies became the Protestant Episcopal Church since they could no longer be a part of the Church of England, since it was run by the king. So Episcopalians are basically Protestants and share many similarities with them, such as their views on Confession and the authority of the pope.

  • I can explain this.

Agnosticism is the belief that you don't know if there is or isn't a God or Gods. While Theists and Atheists are...Well you know, the belief in a God and the disbelief in a God respectively. So Agnostic Atheism is the belief you do not know or know if there is a God but you lean towards the side that there probably isn't a God.

    Was that a good definition?

  • No problem, it's not something you hear often.

The first time I heard it was when one of my favorite musicians said he's Agnostic and I'm like "What's that?". I look it up and then I'm like "Holy shit, that's me!"

Yeah, I get it now. Thanks

So, you [The Episcopal Church] do not have a "pope" or he has less authority over you?

Cool. Anywho, I guess "agnostic atheism" is the newest generation's new trend.

  • Don't get me wrong (I'm also an agnostic atheist), but every generation has a different religious view. A lot of people became athiests (and not agnostic) during 1960's to the late 1990's. Now, people hardly change (religious view) and, if they change, the majority become agnostic atheist.

    Trend?

  • I wonder why?

Maybe it's people's beliefs changing instead of it just being a moderate trend and people going back to Christianity in a few decades.

Sorry, my vocabulary isn't as complex as native English people. I said trend because I didn't have another word for "a change depending on the people, location and time; making their beliefs change". Don't get me wrong.

I'm not a native speaker, either. I just don't consider it a trend of some sort, just a way for atheists or agnostics who are leaning towards one another's views to signify themselves as one.

I don't mean to pry, but what is your native language?
