Why do you support smoking?

Bigby the hero is smoking nonstop. There are even interactions that involve smoking. It's not cool, albeit you trying to portrait it this way, it's simply disgusting. Why do you support smoking?

  • Read the comics dude.

Bigby smokes to block out the smells of the city around him. TellTale isn't supporting smoking in any way.

  • Did you make an account just to falsely accuse Telltale of supporting smoking? Really?

You have caught the aggro of the forum. I suggest to flee at this very instance.

    But you're damn right!!

  • Its a gritty noir video game based on a comic book about fairy tale characters come to life, set in the 80's in New York city. Get over it. Would you rather Bigby ran around like a tool with a dip in his lip? Or maybe a pack of gum, or some Spitz.

It's part of his character in the source material. And like HazzatheMan says, the reason it is part of his character is to help him block out the smells of the city.

  • Judging by your logic, most 'heroes' are murderers because they shoot and kill the bad guys. Why do support that?

  • I'm sorry, smoking can look very cool.

  • They also support strip clubs too. Seriously silly topic no offense lol.

  • I hate smoking and wish it never existed. I lost my dad to lung cancer last year because he was a smoker and I miss him very much. If people are foolish enough to choose to smoke then that's up to them... but don't involve me!

Before anyone starts attacking me, I want to be clear about something: I don't hate people who smoke, I hate when people smoke near non-smokers and kids. I hate when women smoke while their pregnant.

Hope this doesn't offend anybody, but it's unfair to make everybody around you inhale your second hand lung cancer. Second hand smoke kills brain cells to anyone who inhales it and it can .

I HATE how smoking kills fresh clean air. When it’s a beautiful sunny day outside and play basketball, I can’t, because smokers are defiling the fresh air.

Smoking is bad for you and for anyone around you who breathes the toxic smoke of your cigarette. So I don't get why people still smoke?? And why they think that it's okay to smoke when non-smokers are around and the non-smokers end up coughing or holding their breath to avoid inhaling.

Nobody likes breathing in second hand smoke and if you are a smoker and you say "Do you mind if I smoke?" let me tell you this sir/ma'am .... anyone who says "No, it's okay" is LYING. No non-smoker enjoys the smell of cigarette smoke. Nobody enjoys having the burning sensation in their throat, or the soreness in their lungs. Nobody likes the smell of smoke on your breath/clothing or the fact that you are choosing to kill yourself and hurt the people around you.

Quitting is the best thing to do, you'll feel so much better, trust me!

  • Honestly everyone should be smoking given the time period.

  • Yes, I signed up for the site, only to post this question, because it bothers me that much.

I live in NY. There are too many people in the street, and a smoker or two every corner make my life miserable. I can't walk two minutes without having a disgusting cloud of smoke in my face, and there's no where to run. I think smokers are egoists, they are addicts, and they can't really smoke without hurting others.

I didn't read the comics, but I find it hard to believe that it's some crucial quality in Bigby that would go a miss and must be reproduced, especially to this length. To overcome the smell of the city? Please, NY stinks because of smokers. Chew a gum instead? No, he doesn't really need to do anything instead, feels very natural to me, no need to stop the scene or action and focus on smoking, and you are too far gone if you think otherwise. Moreover, does every scene and every opportunity must contain exact movements of extracting a cigarette from a pack, focusing on lighting it, and the whole inhalation process? If I didn't find it so disgusting, I would have wanted a cigarette on the spot, or to try one as a kid. Good job telltale! At least three of the moral choices were if to offer a cigarette to someone or if to keep smoking indoors although there's a sign that forbids that. Yeah, really good job.

Killing people, strip bars, can't you really tell the difference, do I really need to explain that?

In the spirit of the law that forces companies to put big warning stickers on cigarette packs, I thought there was a law that forbade advertising and encouraging smoking in the media (movies / games). Apparently I was wrong. Doesn't make it right though, especially a game where its main theme is moral and making good decisions.

  • Bigby is a Wolf, not a Human...

His nose is extra sensitive (the game makes enough of a reference to that) I'm simply pointing out why he smokes, do with that what you will...

If you're fine with fictional murder, fictional smoking really shouldn't be a problem.

  • Propably the best answer here. Its so weird that they dont care about murdering people and they care about smoking! And first of all its a GAME OR A COMIC = NOT REAL

Seems that this point isn't obvious after all.

Are the killings that you can commit in the game portrayed as something positive, or would there be repercussions and at least people shun you or would think less of you?
Does the hero support strip bars, or are the strip girls depicted as poor, treated badly, and need rescuing?
Is there an option in The Walking Dead to eat people, and you get positive feedback for it?
These are rhetorical questions, and as a moral game these subjects are depicted properly.
Thus, I wouldn't mind, for example, if you choose to smoke indoors in the game and a big monster would come and eat you. I wouldn't mind if there's an annoying bad guy who smokes, and the hero (who would never touch cigarettes) would comment about this (smoking is bad for you) and light him on fire.
So as far as this game is concerned, the answer to your question is easy, and the difference is distinct. While we can't change old comics, we can choose what to do in new games.

Now, one could take this further and ask what about GTA?
I think picking up a prostitue in GTA5 made it to the news, just because it's something that you can do, without negative feedback. I'll admit that this subject is less close to my heart, but I could understand if someone is offended by this, and I won't lynch him on a forum if he voices it (although, DISCLAIMER: I'm not addicted to prostitutes, so it might not be the same).
What about stealing cars and killing people? This is the main theme of the game. When I play the game, I am aware that this is something extraordinary, something abnormal, and I treat it accordingly. Does the game encourage violence in youth? I think some research shows that it isn't, or even on the contrary, it defuses inner aggression (one blows steam).
Smoking, on the other hand, is a side, background activity which catches you unaware, and showing it as something positive would bypass your moral defenses and be a bad influence.
So again, in the spirit of the law that forbids advertising smoking, I think that portraying smoking as something positive in games and movies is something that should be outlawed as well. These articles seem to support my point better:

  • Bigby smokes to block smells, he has the noise of a wolf so he smells everything around him. Imagine living in New York and smelling every single smell in the city, that would suck.

  • It really isn't as big a deal as your making it out to be, you need to relax abit we all know inhaling tar and shit is bad for you so what we don't need to be nannied or read fucking health journals about it, its insulting our intelligence. Find a new crusade this one sucks there is so much evil in the world and your hung up on smoking? Get a damn reality check, open your mind watch the news and find a new fucking crusade.

So because the main character smokes like a Bristol chimney means that I must be influenced to smoke in order to achieve his level of badassery? Yeah I don't think so...

I really don't understand why you are bringing this up, anyone who plays TWAU can understand why Bigby smokes so much (even more obvious if you read the comics)

In Hellblazer the main character John Constantine smokes to the same extreme as Bigby because he wants to not because he has to; also let's not forget people smoking in films cuz you know that's bad influencing as well...

Stop treating us as though we are stupid and impressionable; we make our own decisions about whether or not to smoke, we don't need one person's opinion on a video game to change the way we think about things like that.

  • lthough formerly an actual wolf of giant proportions, Bigby now has the ability to take on human form, and to switch between his human and wolf forms at will. Even in human form he retains some of his canine traits, including an enhanced sense of smell. In fact, his smell is so acute that to avoid sensory overload in the middle of bustling New York City, he is forced to smoke constantly and heavily to deaden his senses. Even then, he must exert considerable willpower to mentally filter all of the millions of scents and smells

  • You say we can choose what to do in new games, well really no they can't in this case. Telltale is required to maintain the continuity of the Fables world and the comic created by Bill Willingham and owned by DC Comics (by way of Vertigo.)

Bigby's smoking is well documented in the comics as an aspect of his character, and the writers at Telltale have an obligation to be true to the comic continuity. They do not own this playground and can't do whatever they want to already established characters they are simply allowed to play in the playground and are expected and required to not make a mess.

  • Imagine smelling everything within a 50 mile radius. That's Bigby's sense of smell. Also notice that Bigby never smokes when investigating an area.
