Is there a way not to dissapoint Frostfinger after training?

In the chapter where you train as Gared, after Cotter steals Finn's knife, Finn starts attacking him. No matter what choices I make during the chapter, the outcome is always against me, either for defending Cotter or lying about Cotter stealing a knife. Is there a way to not get involved into the fight so that Gared doesn't disappoint Frostfinger and doesn't get punished?

    Nope. It needs to happen, so Gared can have a talk with Jon Snow. It's a "plot necessity".

    Its something that has to happen.

    However you can mess up every training point but its more the minor instructors that get pissed. Frost just shakes his head.
