So you need to respect everyone to be a caring person? I don't respect a lot of people, doesn't mean I'm going to go beat them up and burn their house down.
I think you're confusing respect with human decency.
What it shows, is that you care about other people.
The world does not revolve around any one particular person.
People need each other.
… moreAnd quite frankly, by not showing respect for other people, a person reveals themself to be selfish.
And selfish people, are short-sighted people.
Well actually, the two go hand-in-hand.
If a person doesn't have respect for others, what is to keep them from doing something indecent?
That's how I see it.

What happened to showing respect for others?
Respect is earned, not given.
At this point in my life, i do my own thing. I have my three dogs, i have my guns.. I don't need anything else.
Respect is easier lost than gained. So i tell people to always try to act in a way that is respectable, because if people remember you in a bad light, they will judge you. That is just how people are today, pretty much. They will write you off as someone not worth talking to.
Hypothetical situation.
Imagine a woman who, did some "bad" things in her past. She was a hooker because she was addicted to heroin. Its going to take a real special person to be able to be able to inspire change with that. She lost her self respect, but i believe with hard work and personal change everyone can rebuild their respect, but it starts with within.
Because some people feels like they're invincible and can say anything they want since they're behind a screen. Like trolls. They feel like they're badasses when they're really not. They are the cowards. Like everyone they have been given the privilege to communicate with others. Given the rights to speak. But these assholes don't have the right to belittle people for shear self-satisfaction. When all they do is talk trash for virtually no reason. Putting someone else down so they can feel high and mighty. People like that makes me sick and shouldn't be given this privelege if they're going to misuse it. I won't respect those who disrespect for those very reasons.
Just how i was raised, sorry everyone goes through the "New Guy" treatment. I experienced it, you will experience it. Everybody does. I have obvious respect for people because they are human beings, and i am not currently a monster.
Not even going to lie, I didn't read a majority of the responses, so I don't know if anyone said, this, but. .
When it comes to the internet, we're taught from day one that it's going to be "crazy" or "insane". If someone insults you or bullies you in any shape, form or way, you tend to call them out on it, right? Wrong. The internet responds with simply, "You must be new" or "that's how the internet is", as if it somehow justifies the excuse of misbehavior.
There's also anonymity, but I'm sure somebody else mentioned this by now.
I can understand what CrazyGeorge is saying.
And there is truth to it.
Respect is indeed earned, but as Tobi-Is-A-Good-Boy stated: "Sometimes you earn respect by showing it," which does fall under the old proverb: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."
And here's the thing, nobody can control the actions of another person, but a person can control their own actions.
So in many respects, what matters is what you do.

Respect is everything. If people don't respect you, they will treat you like shit your entire life.
Respect is more valuable than gold.
Well said.
So the random person on the street deserves no respect then?

They have to want to do it.
Then forgive themselves.
Sometimes you earn respect by first giving it to others.

So you just assume that they don't deserve any respect until they prove otherwise? That's like saying guilty until proven innocent.

Very true. At the end of the day, we should just show courtesy to others.
