Uk election results

edited May 2015 in General Chat

So it appears the conservatives got in by a pretty big majority. SNP took the majority of labours seats, they gained a lot.

Ukip and Green got next to nothing (Ukip got a lot of votes though). Liberals got destroyed which isnt much of a shock.

I dont even know how many people here are english, but personally I'm happy its not another coalition. I dont know if anyone has an opinion on this?

Seats

Conservatives: 329

Labour: 232

Scottish nationals: 56

  • Well, as long as the BNP stays in their cave I'm happy. I wish UKIP would join them, from what I know of British politics.

  • How the fuck do you win on 36% of the vote?

  • That's the UK voting system for you. Needs a reform, has done for years.

  • That's some bullshit. In Australia, you vote based on preference, numbering the candidates from favourite to least favourite, so even if your first choice loses, your vote still matters.

  • I think that is the best way to do it. Problem in the UK is, in a growing 'multi-party' political environment, it is unlikely that one party will be able to hold a large majority (currently, I think the UK majority is around 300 seats) So are they just going to always do post-election coalition agreements?

  • Wow, we so need that in America... If that happened a third party might actually have a chance. President Nader anyone?

  • I'm glad UKIP didn't win, fuck those guys. I would have preferred Labour but I'm fine with Conservatives.

I'm Irish in case you were wondering.

  • Possibly. Our current government is a coalition of the Liberal and National parties.

I personally think its dumber that its based so much on area not votes, SNP got way less than several yet have nearly sixty people in parliament

And to be honest the turn out was pretty good (77%). Also no coalition which I'm glad about, coalitions never work well, they just can't.

Possibly. Our current government is a coalition of the Liberal and National parties.

  • Very disturbing result.

The conservative policies lead to people killing themselves last time.

    disturbing

Kind of an overeaction of that word, based on one of the major parties getting in. Also a bit of a jump from a policy to someone killing themselves

  • See above. They killed themselves because of the effects of Tory policy.

And it's disturbing that they got an outright majority.

The daily mirror? Its pro labour, of course they posted this, its likely spun in the most anti tory, pro labour way possible. Also how much 40 people deaths can be attributed to cuts is up for debate, you dont know what those people were going through, this article doesnt prove that. Frankly I think using 40 people's deaths as a political move isnt right.

I'm not sure what the alternative to cuts is, we're in debt tons and cuts are the only way, aside from borrowing more. On a side note who did you want to get in? Because i'm not sure which other party even had a shot or would have even been a better alternative, I dont think anyone else would have got in without a coalition

  • The real losers were the pollsters. All but one company were showing a virtual tie. Lord Ashcroft spent millions of dollars commissioning his own polls, but they were still shit.

I don't like Cameron, so I'm obviously not pleased by the results. But I did read somewhere that the UK parties don't strongly whip their MPs, so hopefully Cameron will be somewhat held back. I'm Canadian though, so I'm not sure if that's true. Can anyone confirm?

A small correction to the OP. The Conservatives got a majority, but it's a slim one, not a big one. He only got a majority by like 7 seats.

  • Even a small one than normal, I meant more it was a huge gap between even the runner up. A majority was a pipe dream to most polls for any party, Overall yes it wasnt a massive majority but a majority is pretty major given the numerous parties we have now

  • If I could vote, I'd vote Green Party. Everyone else is a fucking liar or a racist.

  • Why just the greens? They've had one seat and its been pretty dreadful from what i hear. Why are they not liars like pretty much all politicians

They stress that the panel which reported these findings had members from all parties.

And they didnt make up the figures. They were produced by an all party government board. You can't spin the fact that they said this, only what it means for the future.

Labour isn't anti cuts. But since they dont want to lower income tax as much as the tories (because of the way the tory party is funded) they need to cut less. Since the tories want to tax less they immediately have less money and so need to cut more.

Ideally? Labour led minority government, with the SNP keeping them on an anty-austerity, pro socialism traintrack.

  • No, the Green MP is very popular, and got more votes in this election than in the last one. Not been dreadful at all.
