Suggestions? (A call for writers)

edited May 2015 in General Chat

I'm making a character for a book series I'm writing and I wanted to hear your thoughts/suggestions on him. I'm confident about hearing your opinions on it as we have some gifted writers on this forum.

Character: Dahrmuf (named by himself) is the son of the past king of the country. He suffers from what in that time many ignorantly called "Satan's touch" which is today known as harlequin ichthyosis which symptoms unfortunately sometime lead to red skin and oddly "devil shaped" eyes as several characters call it as he was the King's first born son and was set to be his lawful heir however after his father's first glance at him he abandoned him and had him delivered off in the middle of the woods one night during a storm. 9 months later his younger blonde hair, blue eyed brother was chosen. Dahrmuf's early life was tragic and traumatic he was forced into having to survive in a dark horrid land often seen and treated as a "demon" he surrendered to it's horrible vices and lost all compassion or care for humans, seeing himself as something beyond. He quickly became one of the best fighters in all the kingdom and found a select few that are willing to follow him known as the Pariahs. Upon hearing that his father was the king and he has passed he believes he's true king and begins an all out assault on his younger brother.

  • How would you feel if your parents rejected you and threw you out just because of your looks? For that matter, you look so bad that society itself treats you as evil. If you're going to be punished for being evil anyway, you might as well be evil! (This is a common reason cited for spouses who are continuously accused of cheating, figuring that if they're going to be accused anyway, they might as well do it.) What if someone looked past that and didn't treat you as evil, though? Is that a true friend, or is it someone who's just trying to manipulate you into something for his/her own gain once you've reached your goal of taking the kingdom? What would an evil person do? Is that what you want to do?

On the other hand, imagine being the king. It's politics at its worst. You've got to continue to assert your hold on power, including the right to pass it along to your first-born son. But you know the kingdom will never accept that son as being the rightful heir. There will be discontent, and you will lose control, possibly to rebels who are looking for the slightest way in. On the other hand, if you raise that son the way you want to love him, there's no precedent for giving power to a son who is not your first born while your first-born lives. You don't want to kill your own son. What other choice do you have?

Lots of ways you can go.

  • damn that sounds cool. and damn i just looked at that disease and the photos are fucked up. are they real???

  • Unfortunately yes they are. It's truly terrible what these poor people go through if they're lucky to even survive birth.

Just a question, how did he survive by his own in the woods? From what i just read, people with this condition are very susceptible to infections.

You're right this could be a possible plot hole I might be able to find a way around it with a theme like "overcoming all odds and surviving".

  • You should investigate different variations of the syndrome, or say that it's a deformation caused by incest? Also if it's a fantasy story you can always invent a fictional illness that causes those symptoms
