What makes a detestable villain

Looking for help from any aspiring writers on what makes a disgusting, twisted, scary. Someone who can scare down someone's spine. Any ideas?

  • Someone who knows how to pull the strings. Someone who looks normal. Fits into a crowd. Give them a weird fetish, have them be attached to a certain object, and has no trouble taking care of a problem.

  • do research on nutjobs IE this guy.

Take your own problems, then twist them to the most demented line of thinking you can think of, Its easy. Like if i was going to make a detestable character, i would based on me, but go off on the extremes of my bandwidth.

  • Might just be me but someone that is always calm no matter what they're doing is pretty spooky. Like...If someone has a calm smooth voice while talking about violently murdering someone then they're pretty freaky.

  • A villain who is truly despicable in my opinion would first act like a nice guy basically, someone very likable who you can really trust but later on, it will be revealed that he is not all that and that he was using you and doesn't care about you or anyone else at all and uses people for his own benefits.

Unpredictability is key. The most boring villains are the ones who do the same types of things over and over again. When you know what someone is going to do, it isn't as scary when they do it and what they do won't be as impactful because you will have already prepared yourself for it.

Think of your own examples of characters you personally hate and fear and try to piece apart what makes them stand out in your mind.

  • For me the most terrifying villains are in a twisted way ones you can relate too who face horrific problems and consequences which cause them to go crazy which cause yourself to question would you do the same things if you faced the same upbringing or faced such an awful problem

You can also see some logic in their motives making them not one dimensional and in a scary way understandable

Reliability is essential the more you see yourself in such evil the more creepy it becomes to you imo

Very hard to get the balance right tho

  • The sociopathic kind, especially the ones who have twisted logic and morals that involves subtle victim blaming to divert responsibility for their own actions, lack of empathy along with faking empathy and kindness to manipulate others, having an enormous sense of self entitlement, and most of all seeks pleasure in making people suffer just because.

The more dangerous kinds are those who are able to manipulate others by sheer charisma alone, to the point where no-one could suspect them of every being an evil individual and are tricked into blaming the wrong person due to how convincing their lies sounded like the truth in their eyes.

  • Personally I think one of the most important aspects of a good villain is the reaction of the people around him/her (victims and cohorts).

  • Ones with freudian excuses. You know they're doing what they do for a reason, but it doesn't make their actions any less deplorable.
