Cultural Appreciation!

Well, we already have a contentious thread about cultural appropriation. Let's flip it around into something positive and talk about cultural appreciation.

What are some things about other cultures that you admire? What's an aspect of your own culture that you appreciate and want to share with others.

I love Arab culture. The architecture is amazing, the people are hospitable to a fault and the food is really good! As long as you know some of the basic etiquette, people really open up to and accept you as one of their own.

Egyptian street food is fucking delicious

I really enjoy African-American music, specifically Motown, Blues and Hip-Hop. Some of my favorites are Al Green, Curtis Mayfield, Otis Redding and Nasty Nas.

I'm predominately Italian-American and black Irish, but the former plays a much bigger part in my family life. I'm not the best at being Italian (I don't talk loudly or use hand gestures), but I love the meals. We Italian-Americans never miss an opportunity to talk and eat for hours on end.

  • I love Mexcian food, or what food that is associated with Mexico. Tacos, taquitos, enchiladas, burritos to name a few. Tasty.

I'm a White American (I saw on the other thread that means I'm not liked xD...) but I absolutely love South-Eastern Asian culture. I do some charity stuff in the region and I love the food (Pad Thai, Pho, and so much more), the culture, the history, the traditions, the people and just so much about it, might be my favorite part of the world besides New England in the U.S (Where I live).

  • I really do love Native American culture, all the lore and legends are extremely fun to learn...They also hold good messages, usually.

Ah, I've never been to Southeast Asia, but if I qualify for the CLS scholarship, I might be able to go to Java next year to learn Bahasa Indonesia.

Southeast Asia can have a very alien culture for Americans, but it seems so cool!

Don't worry about the whole 'being white' thing. Pigment don't mean shit in my thread.

  • Yup, it is very different but REALLY cool.

I'm thankful to be able to say I've been a few times and I've done tons of stuff there: (Elephant Training, my ngo stuff, food tasting, museum visiting, local tradition embracing even though the Chinese tourists are the most God Damn disrespectful people I've ever seen..., getting massages, river touring, temple observing, people interacting, cave exploring and SO MUCH MORE, there is no way you'll get bored in the region)

  • I'm a huge fan of Peruvian culture in general. Their national dish, ceviche, is absolutely delicious and the only way to make me eat shellfish.

  • Never tried it, sounds good though!

  • It's basically raw fish marinated in lemon juice, but people add all sorts of seasoning and sea food to it. I never met two people that made it on the same way.

Of course Peru is not only great because of the food. It is absolutely beautiful, their people are very diverse and it has many ancient buildings that I would love to visit someday. Their traditional Andean music uses a few different kinds of flute, and is a delight to listen to.

Unfortunately, I never went to Peru. I've been trying for the last five years, but it seems that something always happens to make me postpone the trip (college issues, changing jobs, family issues...). My next try is on April 2016, I hope I can finally make it this time.

  • I would LOVE to travel to Peru to see the temples. I wish I could go to various places in Central America to see Aztec or Mayan temples. Those old structures and cultures just get me going, I love history.

  • I love learning about other cultures. I love seeing how other people do things and especially all the different types of food and music. I have always loved Indian culture. The cuisine (butter chicken and naan is the bomb), the music and dance, the clothes, pretty much everything. I think Indian women are absolutely stunning. They all seem just Bollywood-perfect. The colours, sounds and charm of India are what make it so special. I also think the religions are so peaceful and seem so pleasant, including Hinduism and Buddhism. I love the clothing and how vibrant it is. I love Indian weddings and how they are such a big deal, often lasting days. I like the music, the henna, the jewelry... everything.

  • I studied Hindu very extensively in a religion class, a very interesting faith. You should consider watching a video version of the Mahabarata, it's a great epic.

I agree, the food is great. I can never get enough naan or curried chick peas.

  • I'm from the United States of America and it is awesome because I can avoid threads about cultural appropriation becuase I don't know what that means and I don't want to wiki it even though I just spent 45 minutes reading through different theoretic physics wiki pages only understanding about 1/4 of what they were saying, and if anyone gives me crap about it I can tell them to kick rocks because I have that right. Murcia. Also guns and unhealthy food.

  • I appreciate the hard working folks at Taco Bell. Whenever i need a colonoscopy, i will eat 3 Bean Cheese Burritos, and its over., before i finish eating the first one, my stomach knows what is coming.

  • My family is originally Indian (They moved to England years before I was born) so I eat that like, everyday :P
