Tales Of Monkey Island is currently second on Steams top sellers list.

http://store.steampowered.com/ (Click on the Top Sellers tab)

Not bad going being second only to SFIV, I know it's only the second day of release, but I have never seen an adventure game this high up Steams list, not to mention all the copies Telltale sold.

If LucasArts are using the sales of TMI to gauge public demand, then it seems they are going to be happy.

I'm so happy about bringing Monkey Island back. I hope adventure games can still compete with the other genres. :)

That's way too much to hope for. Mainstream games will still definitely outsell adventures, but I wouldn't be surprised if we see higher production values in adventure games in a few years.

It's great to see an adventure game do this well on a huge platform like steam.

Go Monkey go! I think game mechanics are vastly overrated in all of this sales stuff. There's a bucketload of games released at any time of the year - which means that there's very, very few games that do rather big anyways. Even then it's almost entirelly down to the same developers, publishers and established brand names, which quite frankly adventure gaming doesn't have any. Safe for this one. And why should people be interested into The Colored Pebble Puzzle Of Tyst III or Egyptian Prophecy Of The Colored Pebble Puzzle if they can buy into Bioshock? Or Spore? Or Tetris, as far as "puzzley" games are concerned? You never get to see any Battlestrike game achieving anything either. It's not the mechanics, it's the package that must be sound - probably a bit of a daunting task for most developers and publishers who think they can get by a mere list of "features".

In terms of adventure games, a franchise lable a la Agatha Christie's Fancy Pants is almost as far as this ever goes, but even then reception is mostly rather mediocre and the publisher never bothers about getting the word out there. Monkey Island is one of the most legendary PC and home computer franchises of all time - gaming mag editors and elderly gamers grew up on this. So spreading the word on this one was a given. And then take a look at Nancy Drew.

Number one now, gone past SFIV :0

Could someone explain the metric to me? I'm guessing this is calculated on a weekly basis? Daily?

Also, I just checked the list, and Tales is on top.

I think it's actually either close to real-time or daily as it was at two yesterday, now it's up at one.

Yeah I don't know the unit of measurement. Is it the top seller of the hour, of the preceding 24 hours? Who knows. It's awesome to see Tales at the top though!

Congratulations Telltale. You topped the Charts on Steam.
Let's see how long you stay there.

PS: You give away a free episode of Wallace & Grommit with ToMI. How about making a cheaper pack for the rest of the game?

I believe you can get an upgrade pack, which will discount the price of one episode.

It would still be $34.95 which is the cost of a new Telltale season almost all the time (some older ones are eventually discounted to $20). The free episode is actually free, because the regular price is $34.95. We threw the extra ep. into the Steam and Telltale deals in the hopes of getting Monkey fans interested in other Telltale series. The fact that it's more game for the same amount of money also surely helps :)

Is this marketing method more or less effective than placing "Ask Me About" buttons on strange pirates in bars? :p

It is. Since everybody only asks where to get this button when you wear them and not about the game.

Good god. I just looked at Steam and saw the Price. It is 33€ which is about 46$. It's still cheap, but... you know.
Is it the same when you buy in $?

Steam has for some reason decided to use an exchange rate of 1 Euro = 1 US dollar. Telltale, I believe, doesn't rip you off like that.
  • edited July 2009
The game is $34.99 for American Steam users. Apparently Steam assumes $1=1€.

Glad I can order @Telltale :-) Thank you guys.

Did you ever look at the Apple stores?
    e.g.
    US: Ipod Touch 8GB 229$
    DE: Ipod Touch 8GB 219€ = 306$
    That's really scary.

Seems to be going back and forth between TMI and Street Fighter IV. It's rather epic, really. Classic Arcade vs Classic Adventure. Who will win??

Looks like Steam users have good taste, MI, SFIV and Arma2 are all awesome recently released games.

Quick! Somebody repost that MI2/SF2 photoshopped picture from the photo editing thread!

No need to thank them, it's in their own interest that they sell it themselves. If my only option would have been Steam, that would have meant 1 lost sale for Telltale since I would have pirated instead.

This is such good news.. These adventure games have been in the background for way too long

Maybe if Tales and Secrets SE does well it can inspire Lucas arts to work more with Telltale for more adventure games.

Still amazing how LA just threw all their success away back then. Who in their right mind doesnt love fun adventure games :)

I installed Steam but I'm pretty sure it was causing some problems with my graphics card and had to use system restore to get back to earlier today.

This is good news though, hopefully LA will look upon adventure games with fondness again.

Just wondering does telltale and Lucasarts now share the right to money island or what?

LucasArts owns it, Telltale licensed it from them. All Telltale adventure games are licensed properties.

I think Telltale paid Lucasarts a bunch of money up front for the monkey island license to make ToMI.. Lucasarts still owns it of course.. Seeing the telltale and lucasarts logo's together was an awesome sight.

Breaking news! As of time of posting, ToMI is #1 on Steam!
