"Does He Seem... Different, From Before?" (SPOILERS)

edited March 2014 in The Walking Dead

Sarita said this during the episode. It's awesome that Kenny appeared, it's great to have him back and his beard is awesome, but I can't help but notice that he seems... Different. Something seems... Off, with him. At first I thought it was because he was acting so nice and cheerful, but later a little but of the old Ken came out when he got into an argument with Luke and Nick, showing he still had that good ol' temper from Season 1. But something's still strange. I'd still like to know more about how Kenny got out of Savannah exactly and where he went right after, as well as how he met Sarita. Sarita said herself when she found him in "an old restaurant" that he was deepley depressed and "in bad shape". Sarita obviously makes Ken very happy, and Clem probably increased his happiness. I just hope Sarita doesn't die soon, because them Ken will flip SHIT!

  • Yeah, I was real happy when I met Kenny but the more I talked to him, the more different he seemed. Well losin your wife to suicide and killin your kid can do anything to a man... and the beard did not help... Anyways, Kenny seems like a goal oriented man, who also probably relies on conflict and love/hate as his relationship with others. If we see Kenny set a goal, then maybe, just maybe we could see the old Kenny.

  • I actually cried when Kenny came back.

  • Honestly, I was more taken aback at just how stable Kenny was (well, relatively speaking). Sure, he made a few worrying giggles here and there, but he seems to have most of his shit together - for the moment.

On the other hand, my Lee WAS best buds with Kenny in S1, so maybe that could be influencing the extent of his sanity.

  • Same, Ken talked about Lee like he was saint in this episode. I wonder what he says if you were on mostly bad terms with him in Season 1? Anyone know?

I noticed that, how stable he "seems" yet there is something about him that he seems to hide/repress which is his past. Serita says she doesn't really know of Kenny's past and he is not really talking to her about it, however I think Walter said he shared a little with him about Lee. So as you say, it is very possible that Lee has not only a huge influence/impact on Sweet Pea but Ken as well.

Kenny is quite interesting to reconnect with. I hope he lives on because it's nice to have a familiar face besides Clem that goes way back to Season 101.

  • He didn't seem that much different to me. For someone that's lost as much as he has it seems like he's doing alright I guess. But yeah if Sarita dies then I'm sure he's going to totally flip out or just shut down.

  • Yup I think so too. But I can't shake the feeling that something happpened to him after Savannah and he won't tell anyone. Maybe he saw someone he knew? Idk.

  • Actually I think the contrary if you noticed Kenny repeatedly switched from frustration and anger to jolly (a little disturbing) laughter. He seems "good" or okay but slightly off. Either that or Clem is bringing up repressed memories stirring up his emotional fragmentation.

He's still hot-headed and has pretty much the same personality, but the way Kenny snapped at Sarita scares me. I hope you can set him straight by talking and sharing or something, because, honestly, he seems like he is far worse he looks at first glance.

  • Can you please mark it as Spoiler?!

  • Sarita said she found Kenny living alone inside an abandoned restaurant. We're left to assume he was in a pretty deranged state by that point, and Sarita nursed him back from the brink.

  • Apparently he "couldn't lift a fly". He must've been in a really bad shape

  • He is still recovering form the loss of his wife and child. I think he being in a relationship already is making it worse. It is almost as if he is trying to forget about what happened, rather then face his demons. I fear that it will end badly for both of them, unless Clem can help..

  • Seriously, man, don't be so stubborn

  • He was still Kenny with his sometimes rash and/or inappropriate comments but...he did seem a bit softer.

  • Does Kenny call Clementine "Duck" on everyone's playthrough? Happened to me when after I ate with Kenny and Luke and Nick joined. I don't remember exactly what was said, but the gist of it was that I was trying to tell everyone to shut up and get along, Kenny calls Clem "Duck," and Luke is like WTF is Duck?

  • He's in that stage of depression where you help anyone with anything, and frankly it's freaking me out.

  • He was definitely off. The little outbreak with Sarita and the conversation with Walt.... Not to mention him calling out "Duck" instead of Clementine. Kenny was my bro in Season One and it looks like everything has taken a HUGE toll on him...

i shed tears too. Clem huging Kenny really got me. ;(

  • I'm glad to see Kenny again, but there's always that hotheadedness that keeps me from holding him in the same stead as Lee or Clem. I saw him and was all excited and then his pragmatic nature came through and I was like sigh Kenny....

He does seem a little different... But not in a crazy way.. The way he snapped at sarita tells us he just doesn't want to lose anymore people he cares about... And that he is still trying to forget Duck.. damn.. when he said it at the table. Kenny is going to be SUPER paranoid now about losing people he cares about....

  • He's seriously broken.

  • I think all of those guys there are a bit odd to say the least, they where way too friendly for the situation, handled out food in times of starvation. Im thinking Kenny will lose it soon again.

  • Spoiler tags when discussing spoilers, please.

  • He does not seem alright to me. The sudden laughter, snapping back to being bitter ,his refusal to talk about his past, arguing with Sarita, and then referring to Clem as "Duck".

I think seeing Clem again after all that time may have stirred some repressed feelings a bit. He does not seem well.

  • Yes,his fabulous godlike stache isn't as magnificent.Let's shave 'im.

Kenny seems a bit "unstable" to me... Some of his actions were a bit off, not in the sense that it was bad just.... different to the Kenny from S1 but given what has happened to him I'm not surprised.

  • Me too. It was probably the second most moving part of the entire series so far (the first being Lee's sacrifice for Clementine).

  • Are you mad? That's like cutting down a magnificent tree. His stache has evolved into a beard of manliness. Let's keep it that way.

  • Kenny definitely seemed unstable to me. The whole time me and my bro were playing, we were like, "Kenny's a douchebag now. I don't like Kenny anymore," but after we saw typical, erratic Kenny come back when Nick, Luke and him were arguing, and especially when he kept firing shots even though it was going to get people killed, I just though, "Yup. That's still good ol' Kenny."

  • Honestly? He seemed same old Kenny to me. Snapping at Luke and Nick was just Kenny being his usual Kenny. Even as far back as Episode 1 he was a dick to people who didn't immediately agree with Team Florida.

Obviously there were blips like his laugh and calling Clem "Duck" but after all the crap he's been through anybody not being mentally changed in some way is likely impossible.

  • But that beard!

  • I screamed when i saw Kenny. Then started crying when that good old music from season 1 (forgot the name of the song) starting playing while Kenny and Clem hugged.

  • I smiled, the scene was really great. His face when he saw Clementine, Clem hugging him.

One of the best scenes of The Walking Dead series, maybe only Lee's sacrifice was "better"

  • Kenny's reappearance made my whole fucking day! :D
