Kenny/Katjaa theory

I think Katjaa just married Kenny to get her green card. Think about it: she has a vaguely eastern European accent/name. She is a trained veterinarian and seems pretty squared away, while Kenny is just a dumb redneck (and I LIKE Kenny, so I'm not hating on him, but c'mon). I think she wanted to come to the States to get an education (or maybe was educated in Europe but saw more job opportunity here), and swindled Kenny into marrying her for citizenship (she is clearly the smarter of the two). But then they had a kid, and the power of his moustache won her over, so she stayed with him. I THINK THIS IS A TOTALLY LIKELY BACKSTORY.

i think she is ugly like shit lol

  • Or maybe they simply fell in love and got married like an ordinary couple? It can happen.

The moustache was just a bonus.

  • Sure, that's possible. But where's the fun in that? Speculation on backstory is the name of the game!

  • Totes. Well, kind of. I mean, it's plausible. Likely, maybe not. But I always thought they were kind of an odd pair.

  • Nah Katja just couldn't resist Kenny's all mighty Godlike Stache!!!

  • But it's possible, yes? Why would an educated, intelligent woman like Kat marry a cracker-ass hillbilly who smelled like mackeral if not for that greencard?

    No hunny, no.

  • Well, I can't argue with you on that. Kenny IS a dumb redneck.

Still, I chose to believe that they were in love and happily married. Well, happily married BEFORE the events of Season 1.

  • Oh, I think they eventually fell in love. They clearly cared about each other, and they loved their son. But I'm talking about what originally got them together. It's not unheard of for a greencard marriage to end up with two people who love each other. I don't know, I'm just bored at work and can't stop thinking about TWD.

  • Seeing as your theory relies on her being from Eastern Europe for some reason, and Belgium isn't part of Eastern Europe, then it makes it less valid, not more

This is her backstory according to the wikia

Before the outbreak, Katjaa worked as a veterinarian and lived with her husband, Kenny, and her son, Duck, in Fort Lauderdale. Katjaa met Kenny when she moved to America from Belgium with her family when she was a teenager. She started working in a vet's office, and received her license a few years later. During the beginning of her training, she regularly practiced on farm animals. She started her veterinarian office and met Kenny when he brought in a sick octopus that needed help. She merrily told an anecdote once of how the Wildlife Rescue Center would regularly bring in injured alligators to be treated before their release back into the wild. She was traveling with her husband and son from Memphis, Tennessee after visiting her sister when the outbreak started.

And all of this info comes from dialogue choices within the game as you walked around the hub areas. So far no character in Season 2 has been able to give this much information about anything in their lives. Pete only mentions when he started smoking then he dies. Nick only mentions about going into business with Luke then he dies (determinant). Alvin only mentions about going skiing with Rebecca then he dies (determinant). Now I'm wondering if this is because of the shortness of the episodes/poor writing or if Telltale's bigger scheme of things is that we're really not supposed to get too attached to the cabin group and instead they have much better characters planned for the next episodes(Scott Porter said they have a lot of famous people doing voices for future episodes).

  • I don't think it really matters anymore... She is dead after all.

  • Well, my theory is that she married Kenny for citizenship, so where exactly she's from is really irrelevant. I got an eastern European vibe personnaly, but the credibility of my overarching thesis isn't hampered by her specific country of origin.

  • Really? All that info can be gleaned by talking to her? I thought I was pretty thorough in my 2 playthroughs of S1, but I don't recall hearing any of that information. If that's accurate then my theory is shot :(

  • ...Yeah I think calling it a thesis might be going a tad far mate :p

But anyway, the wiki confirms that she moved to America as a teenager way before she met Kenny, so unfortunately your 'thesis' is kind of debunked :p

  • Yeah, apparently I was way off on this one. I just like trying to think of interesting things from some character's backstories. I didn't realize how much info was already in the game, I need to play through it again and spend more time talking to the characters apparently. Maybe I'll find out Duck really WAS a superhero!

  • Kat had a sister in Memphis

  • True but assuming it's Memphis, Tennessee, they are a bit far from there and only Kenny would know her sister, IF they were to cross paths. Eh, I don't think it's all too relevant.

  • I don't think we'll ever know for sure. But to me it seemed like she really loved Kenny their son, otherwise she wouldn't have shot herself. It's an interesting theory that I hadn't thought of before though.
