"Because we had to..."

When you are at the cabin with Carlos and the others talking about Carver, when you ask Carlos why they left, he gives you an ominous, "because we had to..."

If Carlos gave a longer explanation, what do you think would be the reason they left? It can be as serious, long, silly, or short as you want

  • Because we had to see the muffin man!

  • I think they all had their reasons to leave, Carver may want some of them dead or torture them. Alvin killed George, Carlos did something bad too, Rebecca might be carrying Carvers child, however I don't know how Pete,Luke and Nick fit in.

  • It was actually pretty suspicious answer, same as "To take us back" if you ask why Carver is after them. I don't know?

Probably because Carver is a strict dictator who may have tortured them if they broke a rule

This has been bothering me for a while now because there doesn't really seem to be a central reason why the group decided to leave.

Based on the whole Carver/Rebecca thing, it seems that Alvin and Rebecca left because Alvin thought that Rebecca was carrying his child and wanted to get her and it away from Carver. Carlos appears to have left because he wanted to keep his daughter safe from Carver. For some reason, Carver seems to believe that Luke was the ringleader behind the group's escape. And I have no idea why Nick, Pete, (and Nick's mom?) decided to come along as well.

So my guess is that Carver's compound is just a really bad place and pretty much everyone wants to run away if they get the chance. Alvin probably set off the whole escape thing by killing George and Luke just rounded up everyone he could and made a break for it.

Alternative silly explanation: Carver was hogging all the juice boxes.

  • Another explanation might be that carver got irritated at Carlos stupidity and kicked him out but the rest of the group followed Carlos so now carver wants them back

  • I'll give a serious answer. I think because Carver was mistreating them and being inconsiderate of them. :D

  • Maybe they found something was weird in that camp.Carver probably is a psycho.

  • Carver was too overbearing in his love for all of them. Too many hugs, too much crying, kept giving them unwanted gifts, that kind of thing.

Eventually they couldn't take it anymore and dumped him. He didn't take it well.

Hmm... I thought about it, but still... I don't really know. Maybe they... Umm, found something weird. But what?

Maybe they just wanted to explore the world...

Or MAYBE it's 'cause that argument between Alvin and that dude George, or Alvin and Carver, or many other people and...

    Yeah.

One day, someone in the group was bitten on the big toe. Realizing that amputation was the best course of action, they took him to the only doctor in the camp. Unfortunately, Carlos amputated the wrong leg...at the hip. Carlos and his daughter were chased out of town by an angry mob, the others joined him out of pity. Later, Carver caught fleas from his fur coat and realized that a mentally-handicapped doctor is better than no doctor at all.

Carver's voiceover for the episode 3 trailer seemed to suggest he runs his compound like a quasi-religious sect. I wouldn't be surprised if Carver has invented his own post-apocalyptic faith following the zombie siege; some kind of malformed hybrid of L. Ron Hubbard and Southern Baptism. If that turns out to be the case, I can see why Rebecca would think raising a child in a wilderness infested by the undead is preferable.

I hope the episode won't be a venomous, Christopher Hitchens-style takedown of religion in general. I find atheism can have its own form of toxic extremism as much as any faith.

  • I dont know, they were working like slaves

  • We saw one shot of Clem carrying a bucket in the trailer, and she didn't look too happy about it. I can't help but remember Tavia's line from 400 DAYS about everyone having to "pull their own weight". That sounds a lot more ominous now...

I'm stumped on this as well, although I'm sure we'll get an explanation. I'm gonna break down the group and give my 2 cents.

Rebecca/Alvin - They most likely left because of Rebecca's pregnancy. Maybe after what happened with Carver (whether it was an affair or he took advantage of her), and she found out she was pregnant, she wanted to get as far away from him as possible. Maybe Alvin heard that Rebecca had an affair or was taken advantage of, that George guy was accused, and he killed him? I have a feeling the incident with George was a reason for their departure as well.

Carlos/Sarah - Carlos' main reason for leaving was probably to keep Sarah safe. He probably didn't think Carver's group was safe for them anymore. There seems to be some bad blood between Carlos and Carver, so I assume they had a falling out before Carlos left. Maybe he was the camp doctor and Carver was forcing him to do things he didn't agree with.

Nick/Pete/Nick's mom - Luke probably persuaded them to leave. I assume Luke had been surviving with them since the start, since he and Nick were friends before the apocalypse.

Luke - Possibly similar to Carlos, that he didn't think it was safe anymore, and he wanted to get his friends out of there. Maybe Carver was becoming more dictatorial and increasingly threatening towards Luke when he tried to step up into a leadership role. Luke saw the red flags that this guy and his group were bad news. I'm curious as to why Carver calls him the "cut-and-run" type and how this affected his decision to leave.

  • Amputated at the hip....? Yikes.

  • Carver said Alvin killed George so that may be why, maybe George was Carvers Brother?

Carlos would do an impression of Nick and say "we have to get to Savannah and find the boats"
