What do you think of Luke as Clementine's guardian?

Since you mentioned Kenny, if someone was to become her mentor, not guardian, I think he'd be perfect for the role.
Not only is Kenny older and therefore has more life experience than Luke, but has also the experience of being a parent, which means he would be in a good position to give Clementine "fatherly" advice, when she would need it.

Even Rick, a full grown man, and a father himself, benefited when Herschel gave him fatherly advice every now and again.

And a derelict brother figure at that. Luke abandoned her when she needed him most, during the Carver incident.
Only Kenny stuck around and had her back!
Kenny is far more reliable than Luke has shown himself to be.

I'm not saying Luke may not try to help her later, however, when everything went to hell in a handbag, Kenny stayed.
I know if I see Luke again, I'm gonna chew his ass out somethin' fierce for abandoning everyone!
And if at that point, if it comes down to siding with either Luke or Kenny, I'm siding with Kenny.
And since Kenny and my Lee were pals, and Kenny thus showed his loyalty as such, thus giving him a good track record, I know my decision will be a good one.

But to be fair, if Luke is able to give a solid explanation of why he wasn't around, then I'll try to work it out with him.
Though, to be smart about it, even though I'd try to work it out with Luke, it doesn't mean I'd be trusting him anytime soon.
He'd still have to earn it again!

I see Kenny as an "uncle" figure as Lee was her "father" figure. I think both Kenny and Luke should look out for Clem. Luke is the brother figure for sure

  • Just out of curiosity, what about Kenny in that case?

I think I can trust him but I wouldn't say that Luke is her guardian. Lee will always be that, dead or alive. Yeah, he's probably more of a brother, I think they make a good team but it'll never have the same feeling as Lee and Clem.

We all know, no one can ever replace Lee, but I like Luke. And I see Luke more like a "Brother" or a friend, but not like a guardian...

  • Oh I wouldn't forget the man that saved us and believed us about it being a dog bite! Him, Lee and Omid can watch over her in spirit. :)

  • I totally agree, I'm sided with Kenny and he did show his loyalty and those weren't even his people to defend. I like Luke because I feels he's a good guy and tried to make up for his mistrust of Clem but when he bailed I felt betrayed and he showed his true colors. So I'm with you, Luke has to earn the trust back.

  • I like Luke and can deal with him being the one to watch over her. But I did not like how he didn't seem to grateful when she saved his ass on the bridge, nor did he give her probs for dealing with three zombies on her own, to him killing 0.

  • There are a lot worse choices than Luke. He'd be a good person to have Clementine's back.

  • You make many good points.
I apologise for being hasty in my judgement.
But what I don't understand is why he abandoned her when Carver attacked the group.

Luke might be a good mentor, but in my mind, he bailed at a very critical moment.

Never there for her? I can give you a list of the things he did for her. * Saved her life in the forest. If it wasn't for him and Pete,

  • A brother can still be a guardian ya know. :)

Not guardian. Brother sounds about right. Kenny is her uncle or maybe just "friend" I dunno.

  • Luke IS Clementine's guardian, from what i observed.
A person that takes care of person younger than him/her is considered a Guardian.

Luke gave Clem some food, brought her along the bridge, wanted her to sit with him.
Also, Luke (sorta) defended Clem when the group were discussing about her bite.

About Lee being forever Clem's guardian.. Lee is dead. I don't think a spirit can protect a human in a zombie apocalypse.
There has to be SOMEONE who needs to be Clem's guardian and Luke would take that spot.

  • You do know that he thanked Clem, right?

I like Luke and can deal with him being the one to watch over her. But I did not like how he didn't seem to grateful when she saved his ass on the bridge, nor did he give her probs for dealing with three zombies on her own, to him killing 0.

  • Clem does't need a guardian anymore let alone Luke, she needs friends, people she can rely on. She can't rely on Luke, that was clear the moment he ran away when his people needed him.

  • I sure no one knows on what Luke did on near the end of Episode 2, based on your comment and what I understand from your comment, you're implying that Luke was a coward and ran away for his sake.

And Clementine does need guardian, episode one explains it.

  • Kenny as a guardian, yes but only if he was stable. he show signs of a post trauma stress disorder. A person who is family/ friend of a person, if they go with anger/ depression it will have ill effects on people around them. its not a good place to be.

Luke -- he seem like a good guy. Luke and Clem have a brother-sister relationship, and they are on more equal terms, no one is better then the other. I differently want to see more of that relationship. so if that happens I don't really mind at all.

No one will replace Lee of course. But no one lives forever.

  • Clementine doesn´t need a guardian, she can handle herself now. Luke is the one that needs protection in my opinion.

  • You don't understand my point, Clementine does not need one person in a group to take Clementine guardianship duty. She needs to be in a group where she is treated as an equal, she needs friends, she needs people she can rely on. And what i said was that she can't rely on Luke, he isn't a coward I just believe he is a lot more selfish than he presents himself to be.

  • Does he even care about her? He refused to carry her and maybe he could leave her when she fainted - if only Pete the hero wasn't there. Then he didn't mind making her fight 3 or 4 walkers at once probably because he thought it will be fun. He was the only person angry that she sat with Kenny - it's not normal. He tried to convince her to lie about something what could end up really badly if Walter wasn't a good man. Finally he just disappeared (I hope he didn't run away because I don't want to hate this character).

I think he is too weak to be Clem's caretaker but that's just my opinion. I din't adore Kenny but now he is probably the only one who can be her guardian. Luckily Clem doesn't know Kenny didn't go to rescue her in s1e5. And I think it's better.

  • Don't get me wrong he's a nice guy and all but i just don't know if he is a RELIABLE guardian.

He refused to carry her and maybe he could leave her when she fainted

Initially he was cautious about carrying her since there was some mistrust. To be fair he did ask her if she was alright which was the perfect opportunity to tell them about the bite, but instead she just says she's alright. Even after all that has happened, when Clem fainted he still ran to catch her and carried her back to the cabin.

Then he didn't mind making her fight 3 or 4 walkers at once probably because he thought it will be fun.

You do know that they were planning to turn back at the train tracks since 1 walker is easier to kill than 2 and he fell through the train tracks with no way to get back up. He didn't want Clem to fight those walkers, hell he didn't want Clem to kill that big walker before the train tracks. He even told her not to do that again if she does kill the big one. He only told her it was fun if Clem has doubts and may be nervous. He was just trying to encourage her not to be afraid (even though he is kind of bad at it).

He was the only person angry that she sat with Kenny - it's not normal.

Kenny also gets upset if you sit with Luke, but unlike Kenny, Luke doesn't hold a grudge. If you sit with Luke, Kenny gets upset and there is a "(?) Kenny will remember that." If you sit with Kenny, Luke just gets sad.

He tried to convince her to lie about something what could end up really badly if Walter wasn't a good man.

Exactly. It could end badly if he wasn't a good man and since Luke didn't know much about Walter, there was no way to tell what he would do. Luke was just protecting Nick, but at least had the decency to tell Clem about it. At least he didn't lie to Clem.

Finally he just disappeared (I hope he didn't run away because I don't want to hate this character).

You would rather for Luke to get caught than the group to have someone on the outside that could aid them on their escape?

  • I trust him to watch Clem's back but if he expects to replace Lee in Clem's eyes... then he is delusional. Although he may come in second or third place but not by much.

  • Agreed. I sort of like Kenny and Luke but it's annoying when people still love Kenny even though he's done worse things then Luke ever has. Sorry Kenny fans but you know it's true. (Example: Murdering Larry in FRONT of eight year old Clem)

  • Can't hold that against him either. We still have no clue what happened to him. Who knows? Maybe walkers (or lurkers, whatever) separated him from Kenny.

I don't see Luke as her "guardian" more as a helpful friend and fellow survivor. I like Luke and I don't think that he "ran off" we don't know what happened. I think he will help them later get out of Carvers community. I like Kenny but I truthfully think that Kenny will get her in more trouble than anyone else. Kenny can't take no for an answer. He does WHATEVER HE WANTS regardless of the consequences. What if he does something and gets Clem hurt.

  • Thank you LF13!
Unless Luke has a damn good explanation as to why he bailed, then it'll be safe to conclude that that scenario exposed him for what he is.

Not sure if decency had anything to do with it. Luke just assumed Clem would be of the same mind as him and would want to keep things quiet. He didn't hide it from Walter because he thought the guy was secretly a bad man. Luke was worried Walter might snap in the moment of truth. If he knew beforehand that Clem would blab to Walter/Nick in an attempt to do the "right thing", I wouldn't be surprised if he opted to keep it from her too.

    1st off, great comment.
2nd, you're right about Kenny, he is suffering from post-traumatic-stress-disorder.
I recognised what it was, because I have an uncle, who is a Vietnam veteran, and he to has p.t.s.d.

Granted, that kind of person is difficult to be around sometimes.
But then I always think of how tough things are for them!
And one thing I learned from my uncle, which he's proved by his actions, even though a person has this disorder, it doesn't have to make them a bad man, nor a bad parent/uncle.

That only happens cause of what kinda person a man chooses to be!
We are who and what we choose to be.
So even though Kenny has this affliction, it doesn't rule him out as being a fit guardian/mentor for Clementine, nor as a good man.

Granted Luke has done some good things towards Clementine.
But, if I was playing as Lee, and there was a decision to make about if whether Kenny or Luke was to look after Clementine,
    I'd still choose Kenny.
Cause I know who and what Kenny is, and I know he would do anything to protect her.

  • I had depression in my life, yes I realise that its tough on a person, and a person suffering from post-traumatic-stress-disorder is no different, don't worry I get that. its tough on the people around them also. but both effects the brain and how a person's reactions. both depression and p.t.s.d. make people inrational. what I'm trying to say is this, p.t.s.d is going to effect Kenny's judgement. he is going to great lengths to protect Clem, and those ideas are not what a person would handle things. they will come out badly, how do you think Clem will feel if Kenny killed a person who wasn't a bad person? there is also a added risk that Kenny will replace Duck with Clem. Now don't get me wrong adopting a child and having them in your family is a good thing. its not a good thing if you see them as the child you lost, and force your ideas on them.
