  • Woops, totally didn't see your post above mine. Yeah, I guess it's the same as the other versions. Might as well delete the Android version and just buy the Season Pass for Season 2 on iOS, since I already own the iOS and PC versions of Season One.

    dbrady posted: »

If it isn't 5 stars, let me know why. The port was NOT half-assed. We are not ART compatible, but I really tried to make sure that the game ran as well as possible before release.

The android version is pretty cool, i didn't meet any bug, slow or any other thing which is really suprising , i mean other 40 megabite games tend to exit on their own , but this was great.I gave it 5 star and I'm thinking of buying the season pass but the question is will season 2 be ported as well?

  • I hope so as well ,it would be a bit unethical to those android players who bought season pass on season 1 not to release season 2...
I have finished all the released episodes on the wolf among us but if it comes to android i'll instantly buy the season pass.

In my opinion telltale games can only profit from releasing these games to android ( even if they don't particularly like this platform). In my point of view it is much easier to download or sideload apps without paying for ios through jailbrake then on android.

I actually have ran the game on a Galaxy S i9000, which has pretty similar specs to an iphone 4. It was playable, but didn't run particularly well, so I set the minimum specs a little higher. I really wanted to keep the texture and audio quality at a higher spec, and I would have had to compromise the quality of the port to accommodate such low end phones. We don't actually officially support the iphone 4 anymore in our newest games, so it seemed like a reasonable decision to make.

That being said, the game should run about as well between a droid and a comparable iphone (if you are above system requirements). Android does use a bit more memory than ios, and our texture and audio quality is set a bit higher on Android than on ios. So phones with 512MB of memory and single cores will probably run much worse on Android, as we spend significantly more memory and use much more CPU for audio decoding.

Well, I tried the game for a bit (just until I got to Clem's house) and did notice three things I don't like, two of them already mentioned by you. The sound lag/hiccups, the controls' erratic behavior and the frame that sometimes shows up during cutscenes.

The first two are apparently known bugs that are being worked on, but the third I don't know what is or even even if I can disable the frame. I would much rather have full screen than that frame taking up what is a big chunk of space on a smaller screen (I have a 2013 Nexus 7).

That said, I now have one more way of shoving the game down my friends' brains. :)

I was really and truly afraid of that. We only have a 2012 Nexus 7 in-house, and I doubt a log would really be of much use. Can you please install this, and tell me if you see "android.hardware.audio.low_latency" under the "Features" section?

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dama.hardwareinfo

We use a completely different audio engine depending on whether or not you have that feature (AudioTrack without, and OpenSL with). It was the OpenSL path that had issues on some phones in the 1.05 build. I suspect that I might need to make a small adjustment for the AudioTrack path as well.

Welcome aboard dbrady - thanks for helping to finally bring Telltale to Android! Now for "The Wolf Among Us" ;) - have to say, I can't see myself quadruple dipping for "TWD" season one, but I could see a definite double dip for "TWAU".

Hi, been watching some videos of the android version on youtube and there seems to have graphical differences depending on the GPU.
    Could you confirm that?
I have a Xperia Tablet Z (Adreno 320 GPU) and I have no trees on the first scene (inside the car), there is only a green field and some houses. On youtube, some users have the trees...
Is something wrong or does adreno versions have less details?

I thought the 320 could handle them =P

    Thanks!

  • Will telltale games going to make a season 2 for android?? I checked out and still nothing has come for Android yet =(

  • edited April 2014

Hi everybody. I haven't visited these forums for ages, but a first Android port is a very welcome reason to come back!

Uhm...I'll skip most of the niceties. I enjoy the game on Android. A lot. A lot more than I cared for the PC version that I tried to play with a XBox360 gamepad. The touch controls are a very natural fit and this makes TWD the only PC port that I consider superior to the PC version. OK... enough about that.

The one issue I'm having is that the game will eventually have to be uninstalled, because 2GB is just too much when even a high-end device like my Xperia Z Ultra has only about 10GB available on internal storage.

Of course I have a microSD card with more than enough space, but like most games (pretty much every game besides Broken Sword 5), you seem to be using getObbDir to find the OBB file, which is convenient, but sadly broken (and Google doesn't want to change the behavior, see AOSP bug #62953 : https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=62953 ), because it will only ever return the OBB path on the first storage device, even if the OBB file is present on another one.

The easy way would be changing to getObbDirs ( see https://android.googlesource.com/platform/frameworks/base/+/refs/heads/master/core/java/android/app/ContextImpl.java ) and finding the file yourself. I haven't looked at how device makers implement that function, but at the very least it should not perform any worse that getObbDir, because getObbDir is really just a stub that returns the first result of getObbDirs. The other paths are gathered in UserEnvironment::UserEnvironment (as variable externalForApp, see https://android.googlesource.com/platform/frameworks/base/+/refs/heads/master/core/java/android/os/Environment.java ).

I haven't tested it yet, but from the looks of it that includes the environment variable EXTERNAL_STORAGE, which at least on my Z Ultra points to /storage/sdcard1/ , so if device manufacturers don't include bugs there, that should be all that's needed. Users would still have to move the OBB file themselves, but at least that would be possible.... I can't be the only guy who tried :)

Then there's the data for the episodes. I haven't extracted a backup yet, so I don't know what the directory layout is like but... it would be really nice if we could get those out of internal memory. Even on devices that mount the external SD card correctly, that space is usually pretty full...

It's not like that space is secure. One ADB backup call, a little file splitting and extracting and you have everything. It's really as easy as connecting your phone to a PC and running a batch file. So I don't really see any reason for using it. Do you?

If you don't, then simply dumping the episode archives into the getObbDir directory (the default one, on sdcard0) would probably be best, retrieving them with getObbDirs in case the user has moved them.

If you decide that you want to allow to download directly to sdcard1 or move the file from within TWD, just be aware that you have to use either the OBB or DATA default directories... anything else is write protected on 4.4+

  • Or go into settings , applications , choose the walking dead and there is an option called copy to sd card ( not sure but it might need 4.3 or higher to do this) choose it, and finito.Downside: you have to download episodes again but saves aren't lost ;)

  • edited April 2014

That option was actually removed in recent versions of Android (4.0 I think, but it could have been 4.2) . Some device makers have hacked it back in, but even then it will only move part of the internal data to sdcard0, which is internal storage too now, so... nothing gained. :(

But even then, the OBB issue would remain.
