Why don't people like Kenny?

  • I personally love Kenny. He's an original, he's a good guy at heart, and he's a familiar face from season 1. Made me so happy when he returned.

  • How was it a dumb moment? He reacted the same way everyone else reacted.

When did I ever say that Kenny was supposed to know that would happen? I was stating my opinion in my point of view, and I understand yours.

  • i guess it's because in S1 he only cared about his family example: He saved duck and ran away in stead of helping shaun after saving duck

  • Well, all I'm gonna say is this:

You either like him or you don't. Kenny is the type of person that doesn't seem to care if you like him or not. He will do what he thinks is right.

I think the main reason is, cause people are choosing to focus on his flaws, instead of his good traits.
Yes, Kenny can be a jackass sometimes, but then so is everyone at one time or another.
    No one is perfect!
We have all done things to hurt, and offend each other.

Granted this is only a videogame, but the principle itself is tried and true.
In order to have successful relationships with people, a person has to be willing to focus on the good qualities of others, instead their bad ones.
Though that doesn't mean a person should be blind to the another's flaws.

I personally liked Kenny from the moment I met him in the game.
    We had each other's back!
I, as Lee, was there for him and he was there for me.
We were, and still are "pals."
    Pals forever!

  • Don't get me wrong, you make some good points, but I find it annoying when people act like he's some flawless demigod of facial-hair. He has flaws - many, in fact. There is no neutral with him, it's all black and white instead of shades of grey. If you don't have his back all the time, he treats you like an asshole.

He's your pal, so of course you like him as a character. Unfortunately it sounds like you let your relationship with him dictate your choices in the game. The only relationship I would let dictate my decisions in these games was my relationship with Clementine. If Kenny was doing something that I didn't think would be good for her (e.g. killing Larry) then I'd call him out on it. In turn, he'd treat me like an asshole even though I was just doing what was best for the little girl I placed in my protection (note: he would do the same for Duck, yet I'm the asshole?).

Even though I like Kenny, and even though we're pals, that doesn't mean I agreed with him all the time.

The things I didn't agree with him on were....

1: Looting the station wagon, ( Even though the group was in need, I still didn't feel it was right or acceptable).

2: Using the girl at the drugstore as bait, ( Even though it would have bought us more time, I couldn't do that. I couldn't let her suffer).

3: Having Kenny euthanize Duck, ( Even though Kenny felt it was his duty as Duck's father, I volunteered to do it, after seeing how hard it was for him. Plus, I firmly believe no parent should ever have to do something like that. That's a belief I've always held).

4: Kicking Ben out of the group at Crawford, ( If I did that, then I was acting no better than Crawford. Plus Ben was just a kid, who didn't mean any harm).

5: Dropping Ben from the Bell Tower, ( Even though both Kenny and Ben wanted me to, I couldn't do it. It would've been the wrong thing to do. Plus Ben didn't deserve to die that way).

6: Looking for another boat, ( After the one the group had was stolen, I said that's it! We've screwed around with this kinda shit for to long. I voted getting into the countryside, and living a safely as possible).

7: Abandoning Kenny in the alleyway with Ben, ( Even though Kenny wanted me to, I could not do that. You don't abandon friends when the shit hits the fan! Not if you're a true friend).

And I will agree that Kenny has many flaws, like we all do.
Kenny is quick tempered, confrontational, stubborn, foul mouthed and is prone to panic.
I'm not blind to these flaws, and they have rubbed me wrong at times.
Especially after my Lee had been bit, and they were trapped in the attic and Kenny starts flipping out.
Even though I wasn't happy with him, I calmly tried to reason with him, never once having Lee lose his temper.

But Kenny is also Loyal, protective, a devoted husband and father, caring,( For example, when Shaun Greene died, Kenny felt like he was responsible, and showed genuine remorse), and willing to help others, ( Examples: When Ben's teacher was caught in that bear trap, Kenny held off the walkers for as long as he could until the guy was free, or they were forced to abandon him. And he then helped the others carry Ben's wounded teacher/classmate back to the motel. And when Ben fell in the alleyway, Kenny put aside his malice and tried to help him, and when he was unable to, he at least put the kid out of his misery).

Plus when Clementine went missing, and I had Lee volunteer to look for her alone, Kenny jumped in immediately to help, and I hadn't had Lee tell him about the bite.
So all things considered, I'd say Kenny positive traits, outweigh his negative ones.

And incidentally, Clementine did influence some of my decisions.
My main focus was keeping her safe, while trying to prepare her for life on her own.

After reading this, what do you think?

Kenny is and will always in my eyes be a hero, he is the only one in the whole game who in the end, even when he have lost EVERYTHING, he will continue fighting for something because he wants to help Lee. I hate how no one is cutting him some slack when he have just lost his ENTIRE family....

I agree with you 100% man!
So many seem to ignore the fact that Kenny just lost everyone he cared about in season 1.
It's like they're deliberately ignore that fact!

If you lose your wife and child, it's going to profoundly affect you, and your judgement on things.
And now, the only person he has left to care about from season 1 is Clementine!

Now that I typed that, it reminds me of what Lilly said about Larry.
Maybe Larry wasn't as bad as he appeared, but was just acting on a lifetime of hurt and pain.
    Thought provoking, isn't it?

Even though I didn't like, nor did I ever agree with either Larry or Lilly.
And even though I did have Lee help kill Larry, just reasoning on what Lilly said about him, makes regret having Lee kill him.
Even though there was probably nothing that could be done to help him.
It makes me see Larry in a more balanced light.

Anyway, if Kenny is afraid Luke may take her away from him, as some people have suggested in their comments, given what he's been through those feelings are understandable.
Obviously he's still affected by his family's death!
As is shown at what happened at the lodge during supper.

It's only been two years, (game time), since it happened, and that's hardly enough time for any healing to begin.
Such a thing, would take decades to get over!
If getting completely over something like that is even truly possible.

In order to heal emotionally, a person need to be in peaceful conditions, with no stress, as it will give them time to reflect, and process things.
But living in the apocalypse, where everyday is a fight to stay alive and never knowing if the next minute could be your last, such a time would not be possible.

I will admit, the writers seem to have a brilliant understanding of human psychology, and human individuality.
As every character responds to events in the game, every response being either a little bit or a lot different, and yet totally believable.
I thoroughly congratulate the writers for their fine efforts!

  • Theres so many things to not like about Kenny, for me, its mainly his absolutely twisted view on events.

At the pharmacy: If you try to reason with Larry (the logical thing to do), he berates you for standing up to Larry and defending Duck. Kenny truly shows he is an enemy of logical reasoning, its understandable that he would be heated at the time of the argument, but afterwards, he cant even reflect on the event that just took place and think about what a colossally stupid idea it would be to fight Larry when we could just talk it out while Kat proves he wasnt bitten. Larry was part of THEIR group, if Kenny and Lee double teamed him, they would most assuredly be turned on immediately by the rest of the group. So even if you side with Kenny, you cant be a freethinker, you have to just blindly do what he says.

At the Motor Inn: this is related to the pharmacy, he berates me again for helping him defend Duck at the pharmacy. He just really tries to show that if you want him to like you, you cant think, you cant discuss things, you just need to do what he says.

In the meat locker, exact same thing as always, he doesnt respect your opinion and does what he wants.

Walking in the woods: Probably THE most ridiculous decompilation of events at the dairy. Kenny says your not looking out for Kat and Duck, despite the undeniable fact that you just saved them both, while he was lying in the grass bleeding from his gut. He claims HE saved them by killing Larry in the meat locker and gives you no credit for having killed each of the St. John's without his help and also escaping the meat locker while he was doing jack shit. Again, he shows 0 respect for anyone but himself, his views on events are just so diluted to make himself out as a hero and everyone else being a burden to him, while really its the complete opposite.

  • I didn't like the fact that if you chose not to crush Lilly's father's head right in front of her, he hated you and didn't even care about helping you when you need it. I backed him up all the way, too. I saved his son at Hershel's farm, I had his back at the Pharmacy, and I fed him and his family (after Clementine), and then all of a sudden when I don't agree with him this once, he turns into the anti-Lee. Then, that shit he said about me not being there for him when I asked for help to save Clem from the Stranger, that pissed me off. I don't hate him, I'm just pissed off of what he did in the past.

  • Kenny is stupid,un-loyal and selfish, but I like him because...hell,he's human. He did mistakes, some of them are REALLY BIG,and all of them are in order to protect himself and his family. He's a very realistic human being. And I forgive him because...I don't know,he seems to at least regret most part of his mistakes (like letting Shawn die).

  • That's my opinion too. I mean, people hate Kenny, but most of them would act exactly like him if their families were involved.

    • I saved his son in Hershel's Farm instead of Shawn. Even part of me wanted to save Shawn.

    • I had his back in the drugstore. (I even gave his son energy bar and told him that Lee's parents owned that place. And then in Episode 2 he says that I gotta have his back THIS TIME!! WTF?!)

    • I tried to gave Katjaa a ration but she didn't take it. Instead of her I gave Duck food. And then Kenny.

    • I revealed my past to him and his wife.

    • I didn't fought him because of his awful sitation.

    • I shot his son so he didn't have to.

But after all I've done for him, he still hated me. Why? Because I didn't help him to kill Larry? Or because I didn't let Beatrice (you know the girl in Episode 3? Yelling like crazy?) to suffer? He hates me because I don't have to balls to left Lilly to the walkers? Or just because I didn't left Ben in Crafword? Is these are the reasons that I've been looking at myself more often than my friends? Bullshit!! I know it really looks like that I hate Kenny but, I don't. I don't hate him, but there sure are a lot of reasons to not like him:

    "Who? The invalids?"

"Hey, Lee, you know how to pick a lock right? ..... Because you're... you know... urban?"

"For some reason I tried to save that fucking shitbird Ben..."

Plus the fact that no matter how loyal you are to him, the second you disagree with him on something he freaks out and gets angry at you.

But hey, in the end, he's a good friend.

"She left me... my son... people that cared about us... I forgive her, but it don't make it any less wrong. You don't just end it 'cause it's hard. You stick it out, and you help the folks you care about. So let's figure a way outta here and get that little girl."

  • I personally don't hate Kenny, but I can understand why other people can have problems with him. Kenny is hot headed, he doesn't think things through when he gets angry. Kenny is also questionable moral wise, if you do not kill Larry he is willing to let you die to walkers. He has a delicate stance on 'agree with me or we are not friends' and the majority of the game he uses Lee as a crutch to validate his choices. Kenny also does not care for people in the group, Lilly, Ben (for god reasons there) Omid, Christa, he is willing to let these people down because they challenge his views and choices. He did not want to bother looking for Chuck, another person that had challenged him, instead more focused on the boat than a immediate danger to one of the people in his group. He does make up for his shitty behavior in a few ways, but he is still an asshole essentially, but to me he was probably close to a real person that has had hard loss and tunnel vision. In my game Kenny and I were bros, so I can't really bring myself to hate him, but I would never ignore his faults.

I'm not going to take the time to re-read through what everyone has said, but here are my two cents:

Kenny is not a bad guy. Like, not even close. Why do people bring up the fact that he "killed someone in front of their own daughter" like it's something he did for no particular reason? He did it to save everyone's life. What is so hard to understand about that? If Larry would have turned, everyone in that meat locker would likely have been killed, including a little eight year old girl. Given that, how can you honestly say Kenny did something bad/evil there? It just does not make any sense. He knew what had to be done, and he made the hard decision to save everyone else.

Sometimes the guy isn't always the nicest, but I don't think hes that way because he is cold hearted or anything. I'd say hes blunt and straight to the point. That being said, he is a very smart guy and generally has the right idea about things anyway. As we saw with the Duck situation, he can be convinced to see things in a different light even in the rare cases that he is very wrong about something.

He is a very emotionally strong character and genuinely cares for the people around him.

    • He is the only one who tries to save Lee at the end of S1 E1 after Larry punches him in the face and leaves him to die.
    • He continually expresses deep regret for not doing more to save Shawn back at Hershel's farm.
    • It's very obvious that he'll do anything to protect his family.
    • Even after Katjaa and Duck are dead, he still wants to help the group.
    • Despite his extreme anger with Ben, he ultimately forgives him (basically) and tries to save his life at the near expense of his own (determinant)

I understand for some people he didn't go with Lee to help find Clem, but I really think that was just a moment of weakness for him. It honestly does not fit with the kind of person he was throughout the vast majority of the game. I'm not saying Kenny is perfect, he definitely has his flaws. Overall he is a good guy and means well, even if it isn't always obvious.

  • I always was there for his family and always been there for him but because of one decision at the meat locker.... Seriously I don't get him but I still kinda like him for it xDD

  • edited April 2014

I can understand why he would be very upset with Lee in that situation. Kenny didn't want to have to smash Larry's head in, but he knew what had to be done in order to ensure the safety of everyone else. I'm sure it wasn't an easy thing to do, he even stated how much he needed Lee's emotional support. If you make him act alone in smashing Larry's head in, it makes him look like a villain even though what he did was actually fairly heroic and selfless.

I always was there for his family and always been there for him but because of one decision at the meat locker.... Seriously I don't get him but I still kinda like him for it xDD
