Do you think having Chuck in the game was pointless?

This is not hate towards Chuck, i thought he was a great character but do you think it was pointless having him in the game?Think about it
- We met him on the train and we get to know him and his background and what his plan is
- He seems a solid person who could benefit the group and he has a lot of good advice for helping the group and taking care of Clementine.
He obviously cares for others i.e saving Clementine and suggesting advice
But he get's hardly any screen time, It's like he has his big send off by saving Clemetine and distracting the walkers so the group can find a place to hide.
To me, it just seemed pointless having him in and getting to know him just to kill him off at the start of the next episode when he had only been in half the episode previous. FYI, I would've much preferred him then Christa or Omid but just my opinion.

He kinda is there to me to make up for the four people the group lost in the last day.
He was a Beacon of hope on the day that we had lost so much. He, Christa and Omid all seemed like good people, and after what we had been through we needed some good people. our group was down to Kenny, Lee, Clementine and Ben.
how is it pointless when he contributed a lot to the story and the character developments?
He's the best thing that happened to Clem since she met Lee. Think about all he did in his little screentime, more than Ben did from ep2-5 if ya ask me.
He was my second favorite (not counting Lee and Clem). He was funny, honest and very smart, he also saved Clem and died because of that in the sewers, all because of Ben (GOD DAMMIT BEN WHY?!?!). He also told Lee to teach Clem to use a gun (Which saved her) and to keep her hair short. I really wanted him to continue with Clem, it's really sad that he died so quickly. I really want a DLC of him before meeting the group.
he gave lee advice that helped out in the long run. and replaying episode 3 most people never considered that he never officially joined the group and was more a tag along.. now if he had stayed alive he may have been an official member but as it stands he was there to set lee straight on how to take care of clem.
He had really one plot point. be the guy that told Lee to stop treating Clem like a kid.
After this I think the offed him as people had to bond with Omid and Christa.
Pointless? He is one of the reason Clementine is alive right now. If he wouldn't have given Lee advice on how to take care of her she wouldn't be alive.
Not to forget the awesome quote:
"I don't know much 'bout you folks, but y'all keep goin' like this and that girl ain't gon' make it. You gotta consider her a living person, that's it! You're either living or you're not. You ain't little, you ain't a girl, you ain't a boy, you ain't strong or smart, you're alive."
He was there to make Lee realise that he had to teach Clementine how to defend herself imo
Don't talk about my Hobro
Well I liked it, a homeless guy who survived so long in a world like this when I met him I was surprised of course but didn't see it coming that he was a homeless guy. I never thought a homeless guy survived so long and working with you. He told Clem she was going to die and later saving her. There was not much a connection with him but when I saw him dead I was realy sad...
I meant pointless as in how they killed him off so quickly. , not that himself was pointless.
I think the majority of you guys got the wrong idea.
I never said Chuck himself was pointless, i said imo it was pointless having Chuck and getting to know so much about it him and then killing him off.
If people read what i said then they'd see i mentioned him talking to Lee about life and Clementine.
My whole comment was suppose to be that you get to know a lot about him in a short period of time and then kill him off and leave people like Christa and Omid who IMO less appealing then Chuck was.
Just read the first line "This is not a hate towards Chuck" So where people are getting the idea i didn't like Chuck is stupid.
Well, without Chuck, Lee would of never discussed a plan with Clem, or cut her hair, or taught her how to use a gun. She probably would of ended up dying because she was still treated as nothing but a kid. So no I don't believe Chuck being in the game was pointless. o:
On a side note he was a pretty awesome guy c: not to mention he saved Clem that one time. I just wish we could've known more about him (or even his family and what happened to them).
If it wasn't for Chuck, Clem might not be alive right now. That enough is proof he wasn't pointless.
Chuck gave advices to Lee about how to prepare Clementine to deal with some situations. Also he gave advice to make sure she would be safer in the future so... I think his presence wasn't pointless.
"Pointless" is probably the wrong word to use here. I think you're trying to say that introducing such an interesting and entertaining character just to kill him off soon afterwards feels like wasted potential. To that, I'd agree. I think Chuck could have featured a more prominent role in Episode 4 and I would have liked to see more interactions with him and other characters. I guess maybe they felt that his wisdom and emotional stability would be too much of a hindrance to the tension they wanted to have in the episode.
Its potential that's unexplored. I wouldn't say wasted. When you're willing to do "Introduction -> Plot Thread A + B + C -> Further Threads -> Closure -> Death", it becomes kind of predictable and stale. The fact he skipped some steps and died made his death rather surprising (Even if it wasn't as abrupt as Carley/Doug).
Death isn't about convenience. People die all the time with stuff still left to do on the plate. Having the plate finished every time or most of the time may be a good formula for entertainment, but its not particularly a realistic formula either. I found they struck a good balance of treating Chuck as a character but not as a Red Shirt like Mark.
No, Chuck was the man. When I found him in the sewers I was like, "NO! WHY CHUCK!? WHY!?!?" for the rest of the night. I was kinda drunk though.... still, everyone dies and Chuck went out like a badass.
No. He brought a Sense of Humanity to the Group. He had advices and saw Things pretty clear. Many Characters could be seen as Pointless. But thats just the Way in Walking Dead. Nobody is safe.
I think that's sort of the point of the question. He comes in at the end of episode 3, causes big changes in Lee, Clementine, (and arguably Kenny)'s character, then dies at the beginning of episode 4. It's not that he's a pointless character, it's just (my interpretation of the question) whether or not it seems too much like an arbitrary way of introducing needed changes.
That's what i meant, they should've kept him in longer rather then killing him off so quickly.
Again, never said he was pointless i said having him in helping people and giving advice only to kill him off so quickly seemed pointless.
I just don't get why you would have him seem like a cool guy, have a chat about his life and what happen and build a relationship only to just kill him off quickly. I think the earliest character to have that is Carley/Doug but you can keep them 2 and a bit episodes ( Over half in episode 1, episode 2 and a under half in episode 3) Where as Chuck starts about half way through episode 3 and then is only around at the start of episode 4. That's not even a full episode.
He sacrificed himself to save Clem after Ben failed to do so. Another victim to Ben screwing up.
No, i never said he wasn't, im saying they should've kept him longer. Killing him off that quickly given how important he was seeming to be seemed pointless.
I wasn't shocked when he died, because i knew something would happen to him because
Lee and Clem and Kenny were locks not to die
Ben could've but i thought have to be halfway to the end of the episode 4
Christa and Omid seemed like they were going to be around for a bit
and Chuck just didn't seem safe, that's why i was let down he died because he could've been pretty good (not saying he wasn't).
He had less then a episode and he was still better then Christa and Omid together.
Christa was pregnant so killing her off would've been more shocking then Chuck.
That's the point. You can't have nice things in the apocalypse, and when something nice comes along, don't expect it to stay for long. Honestly, I like him the most out of the one episode wonders. We actually got to know him before he died and he saved Clementine. I wish he was still around, but it seems like all of the perfect characters die quickly. Mark, Chuck, Walter and Matthew, etc. Sarita's still around and she's pretty nice though.
Yeah true.
I think most people thought i was saying he was a pointless character but not true. Wasted potential is pretty much on the dot.
Well you never know, he was known to drink so he could've been like Kenny and got drunk and changed. I mean we didn't get to know a whole lot about Chuck and he it might do him in if she's another kid die so that and where he was heading could've been good stepping stones to keep him alive.
Personally, i never thought much of Christa and Omid more so Christa.
Welcome to The Walking Dead.
Having Christa die when she was pregnant would've cemented it that no one is safe because people wouldn't expect her to die with a child.
I call them fillers, because too me, they're there to fill in a period of time i.e
Matthew was there to look like he was trying to help but then Nick shoots him then this works well with Walter because they were friends and you have to pick the right thing to say if Nick lives or dies, then they kill Walter off.
Chuck, seems like they wanted him to give some "lessons of life" and save Clem to get over with the fans and then kill him off.
Mark however i don't get because he was another one like Chuck who was building a relationship and they just offed him as well.
I can understand killing Matthew because we hardly knew him but giving us all that talks with Chuck seems a waste of what could've been a even more better character.
I guess there's no moral compasses allowed other than Clementine lol.
Maybe for us but Telltale think that Chuck fulfill his purpose in the game. The same we could say about Pete. In my opinio he has a potential but he died quickly. It's just the way it is. In The Walking Dead NOONE is safe.
I think we've all learned an important lesson and that is: everybody dies.
But seriously, Chuck? Useless? Didn't he make Lee realize that he needs to get it together and teach Clem how to look out for herself?
How is he pointless? It makes sense considering how late they met up meaning Chuck could give advise on things the group didn't even consider, because they... erm... most of them thought the motor inn was a safe.
He was there to make Kenny realize how sexy Hobo beards are!
Just kidding...he was a real Hobro that was there to make Lee realize that Clem has to grow up in this horrible world and he was there to save Clem's life after that fucking shitbird Ben screwed up once more!
He is random but I'd rather he be there because he's the one who convinced lee to cut Clem's hair teach her to shoot and agree to a plan, and he saved Clem in the street when that idiot Ben left her there, I just hate he went out like he did
Not to hate. But I blame Molly for ringing the bell in the first place.
Down votes come at me. I know you guys want to.
Nah, no downvotes, it is her fault... But then again, it's not as if she knew.
I see some validity to your point. It is fair to say that about a lot of characters.
