Well it's a damn fine tool when you've already reached the point of no return in a fight with walkers. You don't have to get your hands too close to them so there's less danger of getting bitten, and it'll do all the brain scrambling work you need; no swinging or stabbing required. But, yeah, obviously it's a terrible weapon if you're trying to be stealthy, and I suppose the fuel would be an issue. But in terms of raw damage, a chainsaw is just about the most devastating melee weapon you could carry. Not to mention its various applications outside of battle. You could get out of all kinds of trouble you'd be screwed in without one.

what would you do?
What's wrong with getting walker blood on you? It hasn't been shown to pass the infection and it makes you harder to detect. Only problem I see there is trying to stay hygienic which is practically impossible for the average survivor. And I'm fairly certain that a chainsaw could annihilate a walker head in no time flat. Their flesh is rotten and squishy, and any good chainsaw can cut through the full trunk of a tree in a few seconds.
